In 2004 in Portland, we offered 3 different "cruises" in the days following the regatta, one upriver into the gorge, one down river to an island near St. Helens, and one up the Willamette River into downtown Portland. I had "cruise leaders" standing by to lead these.
One boat inquired about the upriver trip, but, in the end NO ONE of the 22 boats either had the time nor interest to participate.
We did have ONE boat, btw: enter the "fun fleet"/ non-racing part of our event. Would have been much better to have had more. We had events and things planned for the non-racing boats, but only one showed interest in that, and he did not show up for 2 of the days......
You can OFFER the cruising/rendezvous/"fun" stuff, but, based on our limited experience, it's the "racers" who will be the heart of any "Nationals".
Point well taken, it really is a regatta for racers who are willing and able to do what it takes to participate. You and I, Duane, and other past hosts know that every participant is an international champion because of that effort.
Well, it will never be held on Lake Wawasee again. The owner of our yacht club was offered millions of dollars for his property for condos...so as of October 16th of this year...SEBYC will no longer be around.
Change the rules, keep it in one place every year until someone steps forward and wants to host it. There is nothing wrong with Cleveland playing host to the nationals every year. Duane kicked some serious butt this year and he can only make it better since he has one under his belt now. Officers and members can change the rules, they are not written in stone. They had a great turnout in Cleveland this year, no reason why those numbers put up this year can not grown next year.
Unless Duane is just opposed to holding it there every year, there is no reason not to. Great venue, great lake to race on.

That is a bloody shame.

I agree, if no one proposes a site for next year, Cleveland would be a fine location. Even if someone else chairs or coordinates the race from out of town, Duane could be more of a site coordinator, thus not burning him out.
We had a great time out there and would travel again even further but there are limits of time and money. The same applies to the folks out west so hopefully club out there can propose for 07 or 08. I would endeavor to fly out to crew if possible (as long as there was on-site camping available).
Anyhoo, failing any other proposals for 07-Cleveland Rocks!
Is There a time limit on this venue discussion?.. I know the venue is supposed to be announced at the Nationals but is there another time that has to be met? Just so who ever gets it has enough time to put it together. It is interesting That Wauwausee is selling out, I know Al Aekhart is working on this along with others!
Gary, why not in Portland again? I'd really want to "hang around" and cruise up and down the river also. Our school year ends June 15, 2007 so if you could set it up for the next weekend I could drive really fast (50mph) and get there in 4-5 days??? A week later would be even better...hook in a cruise after so we'd see the 4th fireworks on the big river (they do that there don't they?).
Yes, the 4th fireworks are still on the river. We watched from Tomahawk on the boat and then slept on the boat to avoid traffic. They used to bill this as "biggest West of the Mississippi", but I didn't hear that this year.
I am getting to be an old fuddy-duddy, I guess. All I could think of was "what a waste" to blow up all that money in Chinese fireworks that might have been used for some real GOOD in the world!
I am still working with my fleet, twisting arms to get boats out for local races, etc. There are LOTS of C25s near Portland, but we are lucky to get 5-6 out for a series or regatta. I KNOW some out of towners would come in for a Nationals, though; they have already told me.
I haven't given up on a Portland bid, but we have some things to work out, i.e. evening races this time, but there is a LOT going on here in the eves already. Last night the C25 fleet hosted a race: 39 boats, including about 15 Cal 20s. There was NOTHING in the afternoon, but we started them all at 6:30 in a zephyr. By 6:45 it was blowing at LEAST 15, probably a lot more. Evenings are by far the best time on this river.
Thanks for the encouragement. We'll see, but a couple of our "key players" are cruising in the San Juans until 1st of August.
Since I'm storing Nin Bimash in the Michigan UP this year due to fuel costs I'm with Al on going into Lake Superior. Besides the Upper Lakes Cruising Group is planning an Isle Royal cruise for 07 and perhaps that's the racing/cruising combination some may be looking for.

Today is Aug 1st. Still no formal bid.
Frank Hopper Vice Commodore National Regatta Chairman
We had not received any bids prior to yesterday. Several people have discussed making a bid but none submitted one. Yesterday Bill Mienert submitted a bid to hold the 07 regatta back at Edgewater during the Cleveland race week. It is on the table. Since it is incumbent on me as the Vice Commodore and therefore the National Regatta Committee Chairman to facilitate the bidding process I am feeling pretty low right now. When I joined this association and discovered the "Nationals" I could hardly wait to get a bid in, I had to wait almost two years to hold the regatta and was really grateful for the chance to show off my venue. I am disappointed that I have not adequately communicated the excitement and satisfaction that comes with holding a National Championship Regatta. I am certain that next year's Vice Commodore will do a better job.

Don't beat yourself up, Frank ... it certainly isn't your fault. There aren't too many people who'll step up and do the kind of work you & Duane & a handful of others have done for the Association ... it's sad
Hopefully those that considered a bid this year will develop one for next year along with the club approvals and what-not. Our club has some short-comings for such an event and our Cat 25 racers are down this year but a bid is a possibility some time in the future.
On the other hand, I am excited about Cleveland hosting us again. That race is top-notch and I expect an even better turn-out next year. Bill and Duane, thanks for stepping up.
Frank, I believe you did a fine job soliciting bids. Those that were candidates had the time and information. It appears that it just was not the right time for them.
