Hi all,

Just an observation and an inquiry into why...

During my club's weekend Wednesday night races, we have a small C22 fleet. The phrf on the C22s is so much higher than on the C25, but they consistantly finish among the top boats. Is there something about the C22 that is just plain fast? That doesn't make sense to me because then their phrfs wouldn't be so high. Seems to me that we should be walking away from the C22s, but instead, they often go by me. Has anyone else experienced this in their own clubs?

Thanks all...

In light air the C22 may be faster due to lighter displacement and less wetted surface.

In heavier wind you should be able to run on ahead. If not, well.....

The LWL for the C22 is 19'4", which equates to roughly 5.9Knts hull speed.

The C25 has 22'2", or 6.3kts hull speed.

Not much difference there, except that the C22 is alot lighter so light air sailing the C22 is probably a bit quicker.

They were the first planing hull I am aware of; very flat aft. There is one at our lake that sometimes beats our killer S2 7.9... and always beats me.

Check the interior of the C22's. There is probably nothing down below that isn't required by PHRF - no cushions, no porta-potti, no carpet - just a bare interior. The C22 Class Rules are so wide open you can drive a Mack Truck through them!
I raced in the C22 Nationals (as crew for a former National Champion) and was amazed at the tricked out boats.

Cushions generally are required by PHRF...

and as for wide open class rules - if they can fit a Mack Truck through theirs...then ours (with the exception of the traveler) could fit one of these....
