Have not been able to find any previous postings on this subject but did see a photo of 250 with a traveler. Are new boats fitted with a traveler? I have hull #54 250wb and would like to fit one. The boat has significant weather helm in what seems not too much air and I feel a traveler would help.
I see kits in the catalog from BoateUS. Has anybody fitted an after-market unit? Did it help with weather helm issues?
Only a few reports of travelers added to water ballast models. They have never been factory fitted, perhaps because of the mainsheet anchor location.
Those that have, have offered mixed reports from helping to not worth the effort.
Beyond the normal items related to weather helm, the 250 has several specific items to give attention.
Raking the center board aft will help a lot. Later hull numbers have a stopper block to hold the board from going fully down, earlier hull numbers can cleat off to suit.
The 250 requires a lot of rudder and probably your boat has been upgraded from the 1st generation rudder that came with it. If it has the 2nd, it is an unbalanced rudder and will suffer excess torque. If its the beaching, that can be solved by a simple mod to the rudder head, if the blade, an upgrade to the 3rd generation balanced rudder will cure the excess torque.
If the boat has wheel steering, a lot of torque problems are caused by the steering design. They can be solved by going to an open wire steering conversion.
