I haven't been able to sleep after reading several of the postings so am installing new eyebolts and spreader sockets on my 78. I was suprised to find that although the new eyebolts were twice the diameter and therefore likely 8 times the rigidity of the old ones, the matching backing plates are half the thickness and half the area of the ones that were already there. Minor staining on them indicated that the eyebolts had been leaking, but I feel more comfortable redrilling the originals and re-instaling. Does anyone know if these are original, or some owner's improvement. Seems strange that CD would consider new ones of half the scantlings to be acceptable.
As another point, while installing a proper bronze through-hull for the head the original copper pipe released with three taps from a screwdriver. Could have ruined my whole day.
My experience was the same with the backing plates when upgrading the lower chainplates (1979 boat). I used the larger backing plates. I also overdrilled, epoxy filled, and redrilled the holes in the deck. No more core repair for me!
My original "to-hulls" were disconcertingly easy to remove also.
