Boy this was a long job.....I'm glad I did it though. I'd really like to thank this forum for all the info. I would not have known where to even start, if not for the help of the members here.

That's one beautiful bottom, Mark! She's going to go so fast now that you'll need to install brakes. ;-)

WOW, Mark ... that's beautiful!

What brand/type of bottom paint is that? Did you also apply an epoxy barrier coat?

NICE job!

What you're looking at is the barrier coat. I used a product call Water Gard 300 from Epoxy Products. You can read about it here http://www.epoxyproducts.com/4_epoxypaint.html
I've not put on an anti-fouling bottom paint....yet. I will wait and see how this works out for this season and then next year apply something like VC17.

Nice job Mark...you've got a mighty fine looking boat!

After putting on this pretty epoxy barrier coat you are NOT going to put on an antifouling paint before launching?

She is truly beautiful. No bottom coat-Hmmm. Is she in fresh water? Are you going to swim around her and keep her clean every week?

"...next year apply something like VC17..."

Don't most unprotected epoxies degrade in sunlight? I'd for sure put some paint on it.

That's true, it is not totally UV safe. However because of it's curing agent being a cyclic bond rather than a straight chain (most solvent based epoxies) the break down is much, much slower. This stuff is pretty durable. The US Navy uses it to coat anchor chains, you can even apply it under water.

Besides, I'm broke , with buying a new motor, new mount, slip fees, curtains and slip covers. I've got to get back on the water (fresh and flowing lake water) and by "next year" I mean about 4 months. My plan is to splash next week...if my motor ever gets here

When I pull out I have enough epoxy to do another coat after a good wash down then I'll apply a bottom paint. Worst case I'll have to sand it down a little...should be much easier than what I went through before.

Mark: I am curious if you used the Cap'n Lee's paint stripper that I emailed you about. Other threads have come up on it, and I am curious about your experience. It worked for me until the temperature dropped up here in Washington. I would expect that in CA, it worked better.

How did you get the old stuff off? I did a similar job to my boat last spring....she's a swinger..

That's right, I do remember that. I looked at Home Depot., Lowes and Auto Zone but couldn't find it. I do remember looking it up on the Internet though. I think I just figured I'd muscle through it. I bought an orbital sander and a draw scraper and went to work. I collected all the dust in a double bagged shop vac and had a tarp spread out under the whole opperation to catch paint chips. It took me a long time mostly because my real life (the one that pays the bills) kept getting in the way. Once I was able to put a few days together and work on it alone it went pretty smooth. I kept finding stuff to fix/upgrade and without a large chandlery close by, it just took a few trips (4 hours round trip to WM) to get it all together. Heck I do that with simple projects around the house. No matter how well laid out my list is, I make at least 2 trips to Home Depot just to fix my yard sprinklers

Mark,
Nice Job!!!
Where you able to get the bottom of the Keel, if so how?
I have started working on my " Catalina smile " and need to fix a few spots along the bottom. Not sure how to reach the keel bottom on the trailer without using a travel lift to rejust the boat on the trailer with some blocks under the keel.
Is VC17 compatable with Water Gard 300?

Thank you again for the posts just what I needed to keep the ball rolling.
