Our fleet near Portand, OR had six boats make it out to our "virtual regatta" over the Memorial Day weekend, in spite of a shower or two just prior to our 3 PM start. We opted for Sunday so as to miss the stinkpot wakes as they returned from the weekend.
Our course was 1.5 miles in length from start to windward mark, then back to the leeward mark, and we finished back at the windward mark, making our course 4.5 miles. The fastest boat circuited the course in 55 minutes and 50 seconds.
Conditions were: winds from 10-ish to 15 from the west and southwest with higher gusts on occasions. The current was running at least 1.5 knots from E to W down the river. We had agreed to keep things fun by not allowing the boat in the lead to fly a chute, and the guy behind could run his iron genny until caught up. While no boats ran engines, the lead boat kept the spinnaker in the bag and did the course under a full main and a 135 genoa.
After the event we got together for a barbecue on the docks at Tomahawk, shared a few beers and dessert and generally had a great time under clearing skies....We all had a great time, and only lamented the fact that more of our fleet did not have the opportunity to join us. Maybe next time!
The National Regatta/Rendezvous is just six weeks away!!!!!!!!!!! Boats currently entered in the National Regatta = *
Participating boats were: *Encore!, SK/SR, Gary and Kathy Bruner, daughters Libby, and Molly *Lematike, SK/SR, Terry and Kathie Annis Leucothia, WK/SR, Nate and Margaret Hansen Plan B, a SK/SR (on her maiden voyage with new owners) Steve and Chris Eldred with sons Isaac and Ethan *Epiphany, SK/SR, Loren Hosford and brother in law (sorry, name went away) No Name, Island Sailing Club boat, FK/SR, Doug Dillon and crew
We didn't get to participate in the "virtual regatta" There was not enough wind to move the flags hoisted on the boats for Memorial Day. Lake like a mirror and temp rapidly climbing to the high 90's...now on Saturday we had a steady 20k gusting to 35k....ah well! Derek
