Our 2000 WK has Edson wheel steering; I've read with great interest about Arlyn's upgrade and will probably make the change once I'm comfortable with the boat and know it well. In the meantime, while looking it over in the brokerage yard I wasn't aware there should be an emergency tiller, and in fact didn't see one. A subsequent search of the archives revealed a number of anecdotes in which this modest appendage saved the day, and so I'm curious: could I have overlooked the emergency tiller, not knowing what I was seeing? Is there a usual spot it is kept? Those of you who've used yours, is it fairly simple to deploy?
A PO added Edson steering to my boat, and I never found an emergency tiller either. I bought a post hole digger handle at Home Depot to use for an emergency tiller. I don't remember how much it cost, but it wasn't much (between $5 and $10 as I recall). I don't know if you could make one work on your 250 or not, but I thought I'd pass on the idea in case you'd like to try it.

Funny you should ask. I was gong through my boat and found my emergency tiller in the storage area aft of the wet locker. Other places wehre it could be stashed are under the setees or in the bilge under the quarter berth.
Actually, isn't the "emergency" tiller the standard tiller you'd mount without wheel steering? Whils't downgrading to the the infamous 3rd generation rudder, Catalina sent me a new "emergency" tiller with the rudder. Since I may not need two "emergency" tillers, I'd consider giving you the extra one now gathering dust in my garage if it will work for you. There may be differences in the fittings for different versions of rudders to consider -- maybe someone else can comment here. I think the factory tiller will have more class than the post hole digger handle . Send me an email at max_day_az@yahoo.com.
The emergency tiller is much shorter than a standard tiller so it can clear the binnacle. We keep ours in the interior port locker where we could get at it quickly if needed and we've test mounted it (although we've never steered with it). You can steer with your outboard in an emergency (if it can rotate with your mount). We figure with both the short tiller & rotating outboard we could get home from our normal weekend cruising grounds (less than a 6 hour sail in decent conditions). If we were further away we'd probably put into a convienant port & fix the wheel steering problem there.
I have used my emergency tiller and very glad to have had one since my wheel steeing cable (single) broke during a race and we were in close quarters with a Beneteau 32 at the time. I have two emergency tillers since Catalina sent one with the 3rd generation rudder upgrade. I will never have to worry again since I installed Arlynn's two cable upgrade. I retrieved the emergency tiller in less than 5 seconds and deployed it within the next 3 minutes since you have to disconnect the rudder arm from the rudder after installing the emergency tiller (which is not as long since it has to clear the pedestal). By the way we had just rounded the last mark and were on our way to winning the regatta but a DNF put us out.....the next regatta is on the 24th and I have the crew ready to go and the steering system to match!, Steve
