Thanks JB! Its a beautiful boat but badly neglected. Looks like it hadn't been touched in several years. Its still beyond me why someone would spend that much on a boat to let it sit and rot away though you see it at docks all over the lake.
An acquaintance just bought a Seidelman 25--same era, nice racing sailboat, deep vee hull, fin keel, broad of beam, inboard diesel. The For Sale sign has left a mark on the gelcoat. Last registered 1999. There was moss growing on the decks. Cleaned up he'll have a great sailboat for not much money. It pays to keep your eyes open. My Catalina had been on the hard for three seasons when I made my offer.
Dude, those boats will make ours look like cement trucks if you ever come accross one. Theoretical hull speed is a small piece of the performance envelope.
Charlie; see if you can buy that thing for a song. It will sail like a 25ft laser.
I agree that there are trade-offs, Frank. If someone wants to be a hotshot racer, then why not buy a J-Boat? However, I've noticed that the J-29s, J-30s, J-80s and J105s on our lake are ALWAYS on lifts, ONLY sail on race days, and the owners are NEVER at the lake longer than it takes to splash, race, lift and collect a plaque.
I, on the other hand, was VERY satisfied to make 10 nm averaging 1.7 knts in 2 to 5 knts of wind on a gloriously sunny autumn day this past Sunday afternoon.
However, I'd gotten my speed fix crewing a J-29 in two Spinnaker races on Saturday. Of course, I had to splash, wash, rig, unrig, stow and lift the boat so the owner could drive up, cast off, drive off and collect HIS plaque.

Even the old saw about other people's money has unspoken truth's. I am really pleased with how my boat sails and think it is perfect for me. Well not quite as perfect as a Catalina 28 but... no wait, I can't aford the taxes on a Catalina 28. Like I said my boat is perfect for me.
The two I found for sale were at $14,000 for '86 models. I'm not sure if the guy here wants to sell it but if its anywhere near that he can keep it. Anyway I have a hard enough time maintaining one. Saturday night we left out at 10:30pm (no wind all day and by god I was going to sail!) with a front with rain coming in. The rain quit after the first 30 minutes but the wind didn't. 15-20 knts gusting to 25-28. We made 22 miles by the time we docked at 3:00am, most of which was under a full moon when the rain quit. One of the best night sails I've ever had. An Olson may be faster but for less than half the money and an association like this to back you up I think I'll stick with my C25!
Charlie: If your lake has a substantial Olsen fleet and you'd like to race one-design against the hot-rodders, then the boat is worth considering. Otherwise, PHRF gives you a bigger, heavier, more forgiving boat with better accommodations, that can pick up a plaque after it corrects over the Olsens. In a heavy air day, you just might beat them boat-for-boat, just as the classic Ensigns here can sail through the J-24 fleet in a big blow.

Olsen 25 rates 165 and the Seidelmann 25 216. I've never raced against an Olsen 25 but used to regularly beat a Seidelmann to the finish line... Derek
Unfortunately there are only 30-35 sailboats on this lake and I've never seen another Olson. Course I don't see many of the other ones out there either and I've been out most every weekend for the last year. It would be great if there were sailors here interested in holding a regatta but it seems they're not even interested in sailing.
