As of last Friday, my sailing season officially ended with the hauling of North Star for the winter. This past season brought with it some great sailing as well as the opportunity to both make new friends and spend time with old ones.
After North Star has been put to bed for the winter, tucked cozily away on her cradle, I’ll start planning those projects I will need to do before launching in the spring and eagerly await the day in May when North Star will again have a wetted surface and the wind in her sails.
Anyway, here are some pictures of North Star from the 2003 season…life is good!
Nice shots, Don... I need to get somebody to capture us on Passage some day. However, it'll have to be next year--I'm taking her to her winter marina tomorrow, where she'll be hauled during the week. Then it'll be just me and my kayak for another month or so, and skis a little later.
Fortunately, this forum will be going all winter... Just be tolerant of us, you southern sailors. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

We do indeed sympathize with y'all Dave <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> We don't have too much happening this time of year either - let's see, Fun Run next Saturday, Tour de Canyon Regatta Nov.1st., Wurstfest Regatta Nov 8th & 9th, Winter Series Dec. Jan & Feb., Frostbite Regatta in Jan., then the Spring Series starting in Feb...y'all just have to enjoy it vicariously...<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> Derek

I never felt sorry for yankees until I came to this forum. Now I feel really bad knowing you're putting up for the winter and our season down here is just getting started. I guess everyone needs a break from sailing sometime, I just don't know why... I for one will toast y'all on the hard and pray for a short winter so you can get back out here with us southerners!
Sailing Seasons???? I'm with Derek...our Fall Series is just kicking off and races continue until mid-April. Sorry to hear you guys can't sail year round, but do you think you could send us some water? Our sailing is only limited by the constant demands for water from our lakes. Next spring might bring the first official end of the sailing season for us in 35+ years if we don't get some moisture. Guess I'll put my projects off until then.

I love that first picture. Also, here in San Diego, we sail year-round. Sailing after work will be limited, and there will be some weekends where it is too windy, or waves are too big, but we can always stay in the bay. I am working a little on fixing leaks in order to be prepared for our annual rainstorm.
During my time <i>"on the hard"</i> I will indeed, as Derek stated, sail vicariously through those who continue to enjoy their boats over the winter and, as Dave alluded to, this forum does help one get through those months as a temporary landlubber.

This has become somewhat of an obsession of mine, taking photos of others when they are out on the water. It started a couple of years ago when someone took some pictures of me in my old boat on the last day I sailed her before she was sold. I thought those pictures were so cool that it started me doing the same. So now I keep my camera at the ready and click away when I spot a sailboat I recognize from the marina. I've probably taken a couple of hundred photos this year and in turn received about 75 to 100 photos of me out on the water from another friend who does the same.
