Hi. A few quick questions regarding the rigging of an adjustable topping lift.First, where and how on the masthead and what size line? Second, if I use the sheave and slot available on the boom, must I rethread everytime I step the mast? I keep my boat on the trailer, and this seems like a timeconsuming process. Thanks in advance for any help.(diagrams if possible make things easier for us novices to "get it") Tony
If the available slot is on the starboard side of the boom, does it have a clam cleat similar to the outhaul? If not, install one.
Here's how to run the lines. A fixed line will run down from an aft position on the mast truck and will have a snap hook bent on the low end. The hook will finish out 12-16 inches above the boom but low enough that it can be reached while making to the bail of a small block.
Another line is bent on a shackle fastened to a bail coming off the sheave axle. This line runs thru a small block which will hook to the snap hook and then reaves thru the spare sheave and forward thru the boom, around the forward sheave and back thru the boom out the groove and into the cleat.
Do you want that in English? Sorry, don't have a pic... but there is one close to this showing Bill Bosworths topping lift...though his is an external and does not utilize the boom sheaves. He also has his block secured to the upper part of the topping lift instead of using a snap hook there. Just remember, instead of coming down to the cheek block, you will run your line thru the spare sheave and then forward.
The upper line can be 3/16 inch. The lower line can be a little larger to be handed more easily and should be whatever fits well in the sheaves and clam cleat.... likely the same size as the outhaul.
Hey Arlyn, Whew, I'm exhausted just reading that! With the help of a few stick-figure drawings and a sailor-to-english dictionary I think I got it!Thanks. Tony
It's time for the topping lift as the snap shackle on my pigtail broke last night. No damage to boat or crew thankfully. After looking at Bill's photo, reading Arlyn's explanation and implementing Tony's stick figures, I get it. My only question is how does the upper line get attached to the mast truck? Is it a bowline knot or does one want to add hardware up there?
btw, your early hull number did not have the slot in the starboard side of the boom. Catalina started putting topping lifts there sometime after my mine. The topping lift was the first mod that I made and as it turns out... Catalina either copied me... or came to the same conclusion about rigging it.
