Looking for options on how to run the battery cables from the outboard through the topside to the battery.

I was at West Marine today and options included using a grommet or splicing in a trolling motor plug and receptacle.

Any suggestions on how it's been done by others are greatly appreciated. I get a little nervous when it comes to cutting holes in the fiberglass.

Don't be scared. Use a dremmel with a zip bit in it. Use at slow to medium speed. Very controllable, no chipping. It's dark out there, tomorrow I'll take a picture of the setup on Lady Kay.....here it is:

You didn't mention the steering setup. Tiller or wheel? I sail a C250WK with Edson wheel steering and a 2nd generation rudder. My outboard is a 1998 Honda BF8A pull start. I didn't cut any holes to connect the battery to the motor, but just ran the wire thru the slot in the transom where the steering controls exit to the rudder.

Guess if you have a tiller you will need to cut a hole.

Hadn't thought of a clamshell vent, but that would work. FYI I have a tiller so there is no existing hole to use.

Thanks for the input!

I opted for the trolling motor style connector. I have an Evinrude 9.9 with and added electric start and the connector to the battery. The system has worked great, and the connector gives you a quick disconnect for servicing the motor without having to crawl back and unhook wires from the battery.

I have a picture, but no web page to link to (yet). Let me know if you're interested and I'll email it.

That's a better idea in fresh water than in salt water. I suspect that's why Honda eliminated the connector on the motor. We had a little clamshell like Max's, but the cables on the new Honda are too big to make the turn under it. I enlarged the hole and covered it with a small rubber boot from West.

Here's a couple images anyway. I sail on an inland lake, so
salt water corrosion isn't an issue. It's a good point, though.
The other connector is for a solar panel that mounts on the stern
rail.

Hi there,
I have a C25 wk and sometimes like to lurk on this forum because you raise lots of issues which do apply to the 25's.
I installed a Marinco trolling motor plug in my transom. It required a 1 1/8" hole saw. It has O ring seals, and I thoroughly coated the contacts with dielectric grease, and sealed up the plugs with liquid tape. I have it hooked to a 2003 Honda electric start tiller steered extra long shaft motor.
Works great. It will make it easier to remove the motor to trailer sail. I'll occasionally clean the contacts with CRC and then grease them again. Primarily fresh, but sometimes salt water.
