I replaced my rusted out winch and noticed the wooden wedge wasn't there as on other Cat 25's. Can I go without it? if not, does anybody know the dimensions so I can make one?
I will try to get measurements tomorrow. I should have read this before going up to check on her today. It was a little breezy last night. I checked her out before the storms hit yesterday to be sure she was ready. She was fine today. The winds are only 30mph today and gusting over 40, but that is subdued compare to last night in Port St. Joe. The western panhandle, especially Pensacola got the worst of it in Florida.

I did the same thing! it sucks. Cable binds on the side of the drum when raising and lowering and the cable jumps. Im hauling in a couple months, putting a new cable on and adding those damn shims back in!

It was difficult to measure, but my inspection leads me to believe that the primary function is to prevent the housing from flexing fore and aft as the load moves. I have two separate wedges of about the same dimensions, one on the forward side and one aft. First, a description of my winch since it doesn't look exactly like the CD one The top of the port side edge is is flat front to back and flush on the bottom of the step. The top of the starboard front to back edge only contacts the bottom of the step in the middle, the forward and aft corners drop 3/4". It resembles an end view of a peaked roof on a house if viewing athwartship from the starboard side. It also has only a centerline bolt on the starboard end and front and back bolts on the port end.
Wedges My forward wedge is 2" front to back and 5" port to starboard. The aft wedge appears to be a mirror image. The forward starboard corner is 3/4" thick and tapers to about 1/4" over the 2" forward to aft and the 5" starboard to port.
The CD item appears to be flat on top. If that is the case, I don't think a wedge is necessary unless a flat or wedge spacer is required for clearance. I wondered at first if mine had bent from hanging on the single center bolt and a P.O. made his own wedges, but the fore and aft surfaces are parallel and wouldn't be if the housing was deformed..
I hope this is of some help.
edit:
On further reflection I shouldn't discount the possibility of deformation. There should be a 1/4" difference between top and bottom that was not present, but that does not eliminate deformation if elongation was part of the process.

Dave, your winch is not like mine. Mine is flat the whole way across where it mates up to the step. your wedges are designed for your application and wouldn't be correct for mine. I appreciate your time getting this. Thank you.
in pictures I have seen it looks like the wedge ia about 1/2 inch thick at the rear edge and tapers down to nothing at the forward edge (like a wood shingle). Is this about right?
