Have seen posts about subject but I am still unsure how to install the turning ball at the tube location. This is the turning ball located at the bottom of the tube. My 95 WB has a metal plate about 4 inches long at this location held by three screws. The stainless steel pin where the turning ball fits is just above this metal plate. I removed the three screws from the plate but it is well cemented in place. Is this the way (removal of the plate) to get to the turning ball pin and install a new turning ball? I have seen some pictures posted on subject but it shows the tube and turning ball (no metal plate below as in my 250). I will also check the upper turning ball by removing the upper hose. (boat is on dry dock at the moment so no problem) The vectran rope did the job for a year without the turning ball but shows signs of stress in the centerboard up position area.
Before I go further would like to know if any members have tackled this job and their ideas on how to proceed. Tks.
Thanks Paul, that looks like the new assy. I may do upgrade later on. I am sure my setup is the old one. Yes, probably one turning ball at the bottom of the tube. However, because of the metal plate under the turning ball pin not sure if it will be easy to remove to install the turning ball. I tried to post a pic of the metal plate but not sure if it will work.
I see a broken link for the photo. Please post your photos on the Gallery and use the link with the Forum code for pictures. Due to an unfortunate event sometime ago, I will not provide any examples
Tks. Bruce. I was finally able to attach the photo of the metal plate. The keel lifting pennant block was replaced 6 months ago but no idea how to tackle the turning ball with this configuration.
Congratulations getting those screws out! I do not see the turning ball in the picture. I do see a rod that the centerboard haul line rubs on.
Not sure, but the corrosion makes it look like there is a metal tube that extends up at an angle from the plate.
If you cannot lever that plate out, you may have to grind it out.
Could be time for a rework of the fiberglass tube system and install the CD modified twin roller upgrade.
The big benefit of the CD conversion is being able to withdraw the conversion system up the tube to replace the turning balls (I think they would be called Sheaves in the conversion).
As the system you have does not match the current design in the manual, it would be worth a call/email to Catalina Yachts to find out if that design was ever production or if it has to have been a modified design by a previous owner. if it was production, perhaps CY could send you pics that would help.
