I think the keel winch on my boat is the original. The PO regularly took it off derusted and painted it. I have just done the same. After painting I engaged the handle to check it still works OK - which it does when turning the handle clockwise. If I try to turn it anticlockwise it just unscrews the nut with two flats on. The winch has always worked perfectly on the boat in both directions without the nut coming unscrewed. My question is should there be a locknut? The thread appears to be 5/8" with 8 tpi. There is enough room for a locknut but it would have to be smaller than the width of the flats for the handle to engage. Sailorbaz

No locknut on mine. There might be a retainer clip on the back, but I don't know. I tried cranking mine with a slack cable to see if it might happen in a no load situation and it didn't back out. It might be time to replace the winch. They are made by Fulton in the US and are reasonably priced,
Thanks for the reply Dave. The winch is still OK - not much rust so I was going to put it back on with a new cable and cable clamp this haul out. The boat is on a cradle so I can check if the keel goes up and down OK. Having looked at the locknut idea, I don't think it would work as the nut would be so thin the threads would break through! I'm going to put the nut on with Loctite. Sailorbaz
