One option is to wrap the rungs with rope. 1/2 inch and try to do a better job than me. Makes the rails softer on ya also. Don't worry too much about getting it very tight, they shrink pretty quickly and tighten up good.
Catalina Direct sells a set of plastic steps that attach to the existing ladder rungs with pop-rivets. Big improvement. Still, however, our ladders are too short for many. Someone on the forum this spring upgraded their ladder with a fold-down extension. Don't have time to search at the moment but I hope they chime in to note how it has worked out.
I bought a whole new ladder for about that much money in '09. I don't know if the mounting hardware is the same as the factory mounts you have, but this one bolted right on for me. http://www.marineengine.com/products/accessory.php?in=1892028 (shown out of stock currently)
The ladder pictured is of the one I replaced (2 step), but this replacement is in fact a 3 step ladder so the bottom rung is nicely submerged which is a vast improvement over the two rung that came on my boat. I originally replaced it because it had corroded and was unsafe, but it was also too short to use easily so I upgraded to a longer ladder.
I was the one that put a fold down extension on the existing ladder. I have been using it for the last few weeks and it is one of the best things I have done to improve the boat. I also added the plastic step pad kit from CD.
Has anyone found a replacement ladder for the C-25? My swim ladder appears to have spent a lot of it's life in salt water and is heavily corroded. CD used to sell a replacement, but says that it is no longer available.
I found a ladder on the Internet for $60 that was 10 3/4" wide and just removed the fold down part and put it on my ladder. The make was Norstar but I just looked for a link and they don't have the ladder anymore. No extra pad is needed for the bottom because most of your body weight is supported in the water on the first step. Any ladder with a bottom loop would work. Cut off the loop and you can make some hinges out of Bimini hardware. You just have to find a ladder that is as wide as the one on the back of your boat 10 3/4 inches or so.
I'm looking for a complete replacement ladder, not just your cool extension. We mostly use the ladder for getting into the dinghy (Puget Sound is a bit cold for swimming) so I don't need the extension that you made.
After buying several styles of ladders and sending them back, I finally bought a C27 INBOARD ladder which has an extra step that submerges and even with my bad knees I can exit the water easily.
