I tried to keep it short.

Ever since I purchased my boat 6/09, I've actually been lucky enough to get a great deal at a military marina. However, to see my boat, I had to bring my wife with her ID, and that meant the kids too. With that said, I didn't see it much. The marina fees were cheap, but the marina reflected the fees. No water or electricity, and management was rediculous.

I've always been eyeing the Lake Canyon Yacht Club next door. Beautiful boats, and even better grounds. But, how do I get in? They require 3 signatures from senior members. :( So back in March, I said "screw it" and sailed over to talk to some people hoping they wouldn't kick me out for trespassing. I saw two guys in the parking lot, and I headed over to say hi. I found that I was introducing myself to the Commodor and VC. lol They showed me around. I pleaded my case. And they gave me the 3 signatures!
I sent in my application right away, and it wasn't until last saturday that I was officially a member. A very long 2.5 months.
There's also a 6 month waiting list to get a slip. However, after reading their newsletter, I saw an ad for a 6 month slip sublease. I called right away and agreed to sign til November. I'd now be able to keep the boat in the water until I move through the waiting list. Hopefully they'll sync up!

Does this sound like complete luck to anyone else?

Now for the torture. Like I said, I haven't been able to see my boat much in the past year. I got excited when I was able to enter the club, but I had to wait 2.5 months for standard membership approval. And now, to get into the subleased slip, I have to wait for the ONE local boat service to come and pull the owner's boat out for mine to move in. They were supposed to pull it out two weeks ago, but this guy is slammed with work. Every day people keep asking me when I'm moving in. I just have to sit back and watch the other members have fun.
I know I'm being impatient, and normally I can be patient, but not when it's over something I love so much. We're expecting the other boat to be moved out no later than next saturday.

My first YC experience.
At the other marina, it was mostly powerboaters. No one cared too much about sailing and they didn't talk much. When we did talk, the conversations were short. No real connection.
The people at the club are awesome! They're all eager to say hello. We all talk about sailing and help each other with improving our boats and ourselves as sailors. We could talk for hours. Everyone invites each other out for a sail, or for drinks around the boats. It's been heaven sitting inside these 32'+ cruisers and racers. I feel like I'm now hanging out with family.

Jonathan,

I read their Ditty Bag every month. I'd love to have my boat there but living in Houston it isn't practical with today's gas prices.

Back in the mid-70's I had a Hobie 16 and used to sail on Canyon every other weekend. Over time I made friends with a guy over at Canyon Lake Marina. He was borrowing a friends Hobie 14 and we would race and sail all day. Eventually he invited me out on his dad's Cal 30 and I was hooked on keel boats (It took me another 30 years before I actually bought one).

I haven't seen him in 25 years or so but we emailed each other a few times 3 or 4 years ago. I doubt he would remember my name but he should remember one of our sailing experiences. One night we sat and watched a huge thunderstorm out to the west of the lake waiting to see if it was moving our way. We finally decided it wasn't and headed out on the Cal 30 (I don't think his dad knew we were using it that night). About the time we got down to where LCYC is now located that storm came blowing in. It was lightning all around us and with that tall mast we were scared to death. He was afraid to start the Atomic 4 because the carb was leaking but it got so bad we had to take the chance and haul back to the marina. Obviously we made it but that is probably the scariest experience I've ever had on a boat.

His name is Fred Lindsay and you will find out that he and his family are heavily involved in LCYC. He is a very, very good racer. He owns Lindsay Marine off Hwy 306 out near the lake. If you need rigging, fiberglass, or bottom jobs he's your guy.

I'm pretty sure Derek Crawford knows him.

I've always wanted to tour LCYC but not knowing anyone I never went by while in the area. I usually go to New Braunfels in July. Maybe we could get together and you could give me a tour of the place? Since I also have an '89 maybe we could exchange notes on mods.

A neighbor with a big sport fisherman was pissed off at the management of his marina in downtown Mystic, and decided to move his boat. He lamented that in the new location, he wouldn't be able to walk to the restaurants and bars in town. I asked if he thought about the marina on the other side of the river, also right by town... His answer (dismissively): "They're all blow-boaters. They're a different kind of people.) Indeed the place he's going to has not one mast sticking up... I didn't consider it for Passage, and wouldn't even put Sarge there!

They (the <i>other</i> "they") are indeed "a different kind of people." I don't consider myself one of them. (Their perspective probably is "Real men don't run Honda outboards.")

Congrats on your move--sounds like the stars were aligned!

Thanks! I'm really excited about the move.

Gary, it's Fred Lindsey that we're waiting on. lol He's the only game in town from what I hear, and has a ton of work to do. And of course, right now is the busiest time of the year. I remember seeing his name on some club trophies. So, he also reserves some of his time to racing. I hear he's a really nice guy and does great work.
We should definitely make plans to meet up in a month or so. I can also head over there.

OT: I saw about 5 C25's in the marina. Once I get to know more people, and the contact list, I should ask the owner's about holding the nationals here.

Definitely a different kind of people. Around here the guys in the bigger boats think they are above everything and everyone. I guess technically some of them are "above" some of us.

I had a run in a few weeks ago with a stinkpotter in a 35' cruiser plowing down the channel into the marina. Easy 2 foot wake in a no wake zone. Everything not tied down ended up on the floor.

I called him on it on the radio. He advised "This isn't a no wake zone pal". I called him back and suggested he get some glasses because I was passing three (3)!! no wake signs on the channel markers he'd just passed. He came back with "How much do you want to bet buddy". I asked him "How much do you want to lose" and offered to send him pictures from my camera phone! End of conversation!

Sorry for the hijack! I had to get that off my chest. If anyone is offended let me know and I will delete it.

Congrats on the big move up! Really cool....it's gonna change your sailing life.

I want to get into the Fort Worth Boat Club on Eagle Mountain....it's the same deal, a country club atmosphere on the lake, centered around sailing, with events, regattas, dinner socials, etc.....great facilities, bar, restaurant, cabanas, yard, crane, club boats (j/22's). Same entry requirements, gotta have signatures but that's no problem...just ask and they'll be provided...the club isn't one of those seriously snooty exclusive joints. There is an initiation fee and monthly dues.

Again, congrats on getting in and getting a slip....

He's always been a good racer. I don't think I ever beat him even though I had a Hobie 16 and he was on a 14. He is s super nice guy as I remember.

If you look around on the LCYC website you will see many pictures of him racing a J22 or maybe it's a J24.

Yea, it's the same here. The facilities are great with a workshop, hoist, mast crane, pool, power washer......
Like you said, there are initial fees, which were killer, but still worth it in the end as monthly club and slip fees are low.

I'll definitely have to meet him. I've talked to a few club racers and enjoy learning their secrets. I'm hoping to take in enough to enter on my own, but there's so much. I learned a lot from Derek last weekend, more than I can take in. He's like a sailing machine. lol

Sure, I'll let you know. I've also got my brother at about 200lbs, and good friend for light air at 130lbs, but is still strong.

Yikes! It's only 6 months for the 24' and 28' long slips. But, the longer slips have a 6-14 year waiting list. 1998 I believe. lol There's also some guys on the short slip list that have been waiting a few years just to get leeward position.

You just had to rub it in didn't you! I am so jealous!

This picture just became my new desktop background.

What is the big tank like structure on the new Superdock?

Did I say it wasn't economically feasible due to gas prices. Where is the application form?

Very pretty indeed. I've done alot of diving at Canyon. A few times at North Park but mostly on the south shore by the dam. Difficult access but once you get all your gear down to the shore it's a nice wall dive when the water has been undisturbed for a while and settled nicely.

The new super dock is for the Optis. The tall structure on the left contains about 10-15 of the Opti's sails stading up. The short box in the middle contains the rudders and daggers. And to the right of that is a PVC cradle system with all the Optis standing up.
The old dock closest in the pic, and just left out of the picture, is where the lasers and Sunfish are held.
On the right, below the covered structure, is the red/yellow RC boat, along with a couple chase boats.

On the far right, just outside the marina by itself facing the camera, is a C25 that's been sitting there for months. It looks neglected. I meant to ask about why it's there. Perhaps someone didn't pay the fees/dues. I believe it's an 86 or 87. I'll have to ask this weekend.

Kudos to the people who run that marina - looks professionally mantained any very organized!

Nice to see sailboats outnumbering <s>stink</s> power boats also. A real sail<i>ing community</i>.

Yea, there's always people hanging around, and plenty of racing events, and learning programs.

In the bylaws, there's a requirement that not more than like ~10% (I'm guessing) boats in the marina can be power. But, there aren't any, except for the support boats.

Beautiful marina.

A couple of sailboats, on the left side of the photo, appear to be lifted out of the water, what's up with that?
