My old Facnor furler has finally bit the dust......new furler not in the budget. I would like to use the hank-on 105 that I have but am not sure of sheet tackle placement. Would seem that I could slide the rollers all the way forward on the Genoa tracks and the angle would work OK. Thoughts?
Aboard the sailing vessel ''Simple Pleasures'', Kerr Lake, NC
Start with the rollers placed so that the sheets make a perpendicular line to the luff, then set the blocks on the jib track so that the telltales break at the same time when you tack.
with the working jib I had my jib cars (rollers on the track) somewhere in the middle of the first cabin window, but what you want to do with whatever sail in most circumstances is place the car far enough forward where there's enough downward force on the back of (leech) the sail that it doesn't twist towards the top (head) but far enough back to where the bottom of the jib (foot) is taught as well.
Keep in mind that the jib cars are not a "set and forget" sail control. You can adjust the cars and have a dramatic effect on trim depending on the conditions.
By moving the cars further aft and allowing more twist in the leach of the head sail in heavy wind, it keeps the top of the jib open. This really helps to prevent the boat from being overpowered in big gusts.
