Read these, I'm sure they will help in your decision. By the way I'm right around the corner here in Glen Cove so if you need any help just ask. http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/tech/tech25/summertm.asp http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/tech/tech25/summert2.asp <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
Ha! I love my 79 fin. Now that the rain has filled in the lake all I need is some sunshine and a little bit of wind.
The two links that Islander and Peter referenced are fantastic. Something else to keep in mind as you're looking at the boat - take your time going over it, and don't be afraid to go over it again another day. Don't let the seller rush you. You might even tell the seller, in advance, that you'll need at least an hour to go over the boat. That will help him/her set aside an appropriate amount of time, and help keep you from feeling rushed.
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><i>Originally posted by JimGo</i> <br />...take your time going over it...<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">...and take a clip-board. I'll suggest two columns, one for writing down "plus" items as you're looking, and the other... you know (like "split rudder", "water stains around chainplates", etc.) This should help you do your comparative analysis after you get home, or a few weeks later, when the boats start getting mixed up in your head. (...or at least they did in mine.)
Love the clip board idea Dave. Unfortunately the boats are a bit of a PITA to get two so Im trying to make one trip to see all 3 then decide. If one in particular doesn't stand out and grab me I will wait for the right boat.
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><i>Originally posted by av8rOC</i> <br />...Im trying to make one trip to see all 3 then decide...<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">My point exactly. You want to go home with all of your observations, and make a decision... The +/- notes will almost make the decision for you... Of course, the right side of your brain will try to overrule... So your notes will help the left side either stand up for itself or go along.
And if you decide to continue the search, you'll have some "data" to compare to, and after a while, you might come back to one of these boats. In this market at this time of year, there shouldn't be too much of a rush.
Again, if I can, I'd be happy to look at the Gales Ferry boat with you and, in the process, suggest some things to look for on the others. I'm retired--February is a slow month in my business!
One of the younger guys at my local WM boating store told me he's been sailing for years and knows I have a C25.
He asked me about whether a C25 would be big enough for sailing with his wife and whether it would be good for sailing all around LI Sound and out to Naragansett Bay, Block Island and Cape Cod and the Islands. He also asked whether he thought a C22 would be closer to his budget ($2000-3000) and thinking about several posts here and other threads, I told him I thought he'd be way better off taking his money to use as a downpayment and go up to an older C25 than going with the C22. I invited him to this Forum.
Not to hijack this thread, but with all the boats available and deals out there, how would you advise him? I've added a new thread on this topic.
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><i>Originally posted by bigelowp</i> <br />So how is the search proceeding? Have a short list yet or, maybe a deal in hand ??? <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
Sorry guys I had to put the search on a temp hold.. My grandfather who is also my partner in the boat totaled his car in Florida last week and I've been helping him get all setup in a new car. I'm flying a 4 day trip that ends tomorrow and then flying down to florida to drive back with him.
Should be back on the hunt next week as long as he's feeling up to it.

I've was struggling with the same dilemma at first but after a lot of research I decided the C22 would do the job but the C25 would do it better. (Especially in my case with 2 kids). More room, more comfort, more stability, etc.. and all for roughly the same price.
av8rOC - I hope your grandfather is OK. Good luck with the car, and be sure to keep us up to speed on your search!
Bruce - do they have kids, or plan on having them soon? The C25 is a MUCH better fit for a family, IMHO. Like av8rOC, I have two kids, and need the space for them, and my wife and me, to stretch out.
This is a tough time of year in which to be buying, because given a 2-3 week buying cycle, it's almost time to get out on the water. If there are repairs needed to the boat, it will delay launch, which will probably be a disappointment for them, and they'll pay a premium for a "ready to launch" boat. Granted, boats generally aren't selling that well these days, so maybe the premium won't be so high, but it's still a tough time.
I guess your grandfather is okay health-wise. Good luck with setup of the new car.
Agree with Jim's comments. He would be okay with the C22 but better with the C25. The LI Sound can have wave action and be just like out at sea and considering he wants to go far distances even as far as Cape Cod he would be much better off with a C25 or larger.

Agreed... What most people don't realize is that a C25 is actually more difficult to sail than a larger boat. Larger vessels have hopefully better stability and systems which makes for a safer and more comfortable ride. I am still down with that there delivery though.
Back home! Grandpa is doing well and loving his new car so the accident turned out ok after all.. My work schedule is hectic the first half of this week but I may go see the 3 boats (or at least mystic and RI boats) Thursday as its my only day off. I still need to line things up with the broker and sellers see if it will work. Dave are you still interested in looking at the wales ferry boat and if so available Thursday?

Sean: Next Thursday looks tricky at this point--I'll know more early next week.
I'm glad things worked out for your grandfather. Isn't it great that these days you can total a car, and the only casualty is the car. Believe me, 'twas not always so!
Ok Dave let me know. Its so true, the fact an 85 yr old man can wreck at 45mph and walk away with nothing more than some black and blue marks is really amazing, I'm extremely lucky he's ok!
