Last night I get a txt from the previous owner of my Catalina 25 telling me that the boat is now floating. It was laying on it's port side. Although it seems to be sitting low in the water. So I head that way to see it and sure enough it has water inside. Could the water have gone in thru the bilge pump?
My bilge pump is at the top of the sail locker. If the water was high enough to go through it, the cockpit would be allowing water in as well, so the pump would be the least of my worries.
We got 4+ inches of rain from this last storm system. The lake came up almost 3' as of this morning.
I guess it's possible the bilge pump exit hole could be leaking....around the plastic fitting or where the hose attaches....you did have alot of water in the boat. But, we have had several good rain storms since October.
Pump it out and see what happens. There are many ways for water to get in a boat, and I would wait a see if I had a problem before looking for a solution. That's a lot of rain.
A fin keeler will lie further over than other models--maybe to 45 degrees or more. The molded gutters around the sail locker ("dumpster") hatch and at the aft end of the seat are designed to drain under moderate heel, but might not when the boat is lying that far over to port. Rain could have pooled between the seat and the coaming, and found its way through the hatch. That locker is open to the bilge. It also is possible that water came over the coaming onto the port seat before the boat started floating up and similarly leaked into the sail locker.
Is your through hull fitting at the ice box/sink open? I'm not sure, but if the boat is laying on its port side, it may be possible for water to enter there. How much water was in the boat?

I've seen this happen. Not with a Catalina but with other boats. Only they didn't right themselves, just filled up with water.
Wow what a mess. Its does not look like rain water. Was it the same color as in the lake? If there is no structural leak, check the siphon valve on bilge pump, thru-hulls and hose connections.
