Really? with the lowers still connected? I doubt it.

If this newbie started fidgeting with the backstay and shrouds, she could only make things worse since then nothing would be holding up the mast. If she left the shrouds alone, the mast would not be as likely to fall since she apparently already disconnected the forestay. She needed to do nothing without supervision.

John... If two things (forestay and backstay) are pulling in opposite directions on the top of the mast, and somebody releases one of them, what good do you think the other one is doing? The only hope for that mast is the four lower shrouds, which are positioned to hold it up under minimal load (no sails up). But the tensioned backstay <i>alone</i> is working <i>against</i> them--pulling against the forward lowers. That apparently isn't catastrophic, but it can't be beneficial.

Hopefully she has gotten somebody--anybody--to assess and help stabilize the situation. I predict a happy ending...

Backstay..a 1/2 inch looser...okay. Lower shrouds - right.
I can't think of anything else to add to this discussion.

Also, I'm not into the BMW forum but if you have a Mini-Cooper, go to the North American Motoring Forum...it is gigantic !
