Does anyone know the typical thickness of a solid front hatch? I was considering recessing a piece of 3/16" acrylic as a skylight. I am going to make some windows next month and should have enough left over acrylic.

Well I guess you could remove some of the screws for the hinges and measure the depth and hope the hatch is the same thickness throughout. Are you going to replace the whole hatch or just put a lite somewhere in the middle?
I found some similar to the link above for about $10 if I remember correctly (but don't remember where). They're not as nice as those, but they do what I need when I'm working on my lathe.
I am planning on doing the same thing as Tomas's boat. That was a great install. I wasn't sure if the front hatch was thick enough or if had to have some additional glass added.
AH. I see. They just mounted it on top lie the windows. I was gonna try to recess it, but that might not work without adding more fiberglass for thickness.
No need to add more fiberglass. Thickness is about 15mm if I remember correctly. Plexi is about 5mm.
I would not stand on it but I don't think its too fragile.
There is a little of additional heat from sun, but also light and if you install some curtains its still better than original V-berth ala "black cave" .
Maybe some automotive UV foil can do the trick too.
I cut a hole in my hatch on Passage (85) and the fiberglass was about 1/4" on top and bottom, and about 1/2" of wood. I'd say its about one inch thick (25.4mm). Not sure what thickness your's is.
My boat has two Lewmar hatches, and I covered both to keep out the heat. They really warm up the interior so much that, on a warm day, even the AC can't cool the interior of the boat to a comfortable level.
