First, a Happy Thanksgiving to all. That said, I am at a crossroads. My chartplotter has died. I have an IPad 1, and have loaded some navigations apps which seem pretty good. The Ipad is both WiFi and 3G enabled. I am thinking about just using it instead of getting a new chartplotter. So, (1) will it work if it is out of WiFi/3G range? (2) What is a good waterproof cover for it? (3) Is there anything that can be done about the glare on the screen? and (4) Does anyone have experience just using an IPad for navigation? Thanks.
It will work. The gps signal is separate. I will be evaluating anti-glare screen protectors this winter in an Iphone 4s and posting some results. Glare should be the only issue with the Ipad. I have InavX on my phone and Ipod Touch. The I pod doesn't have gps and I have a bluetooth signal source. The Iphone and Ipad have gps, so that is all you need to go with what ever nav package you use. The Ipod has worked well for me in the cockpit except for avoiding reflections, but I use it with MacENC running on my laptop in the cabin and can call up any of MacENC's instrument display or chart pages on the phone or pod.
