Here's the latest. No one can make an accurate estimate of the repair without dropping the keel and sanding around the keel trunk to see where the hull might be compromised. So the estimate is going to be in two phases: 1) Discovery 2) Repair
Also had the motor removed and the marina cut the wires for the electric start because I guess they didn't want to crawl into the aft berth and disconnect them. Grrrr.
I want to give a special shout out to Mr. Pat Duffy who came down to my marina today and helped me get my head sail off the furler. It was hot as blazes out there today and he and his son came by to help me before going out for a sail at there own marina. Thank you Pat!!!
Cate - it was nice to meet you and my pleasure to help out. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do. I'd also be interested in seeing what they find over at Ocean Gate so let me know when they have a diagnosis.
Hope they cut the electric wires close to the hull. If the boat is repairable, you can put a trolling motor type plug on the wire and make it a plug in.
I am not able to take pictures of the repair work because I am out of state. The final analysis was that the keel trunk needed to be fiberglassed and the keel cable replaced and reattached. The stern cleats will also be remounted and set.
That's it. Insurance paid for it all. Boat is back on the market for sale. (deck is looking a little worse for wear as I didn't maintain the brightwork or clean it)
Congrats! Glad it all worked out for you. Would have been really sad to see a boat like that go to the scraps.
I was thinking while reading the whole thread, if it was really as bad as they originally thought, wouldn't it be easier to just convert the swing to wing? I would think you could grind away the swing mount, bolt up a wing, and fiberglass it up for less than $4k.
I know the swing keel pivot is hard to work with and to structurally fiberglass that intricate area, but bolting up a premade wing/fin keel and slapping some fiberglass around it just seems so much easier.

The marina cut my electric start cord from my Tohatsu because it was much easier to get off the boat. I will speaking to them about reattaching when I go to pick it up.

They owe you a new cable, installed inside the engine--not spliced back together ("re-attached"). Anything less, and you can report the name of the marina here--we'll take care of the rest.
CateP, I'm very interested in what you find out about your trunk damage. My boat was stranded in a march with Irene and now the I have it back I have a simular crack in the cabin sole plate just aft of the trunk. I didn't notice it at first because it's mostly under the cover. I have a small amount of water coming in under the galley area and in towards the center of the hull whereas before the storm the boat was dry. I know that rain water is coming into the lazerette area and following the bilage pump line into the cabin, but I had not considered that there might be something else going on with the trunk.
BTW - Thank God for insurance! $5000 to get the boat pulled from the marsh, $4500 in damages. I insured it for $10K
As it has been determined by your insurance carrier that the boat can be and will be repaired, you should make sure that all damage is covered, including the outboard wiring (which the yard SHOULD replace) and any other scratches/gauges, etc. You have insurance for just this situation, just make sure that all damage is repaired.
I'm going to call the marina that cut my Tohatsu electric start cable. Now that I've read some of the replies on this thread, it does seem very wrong that they did that. Curious what they will say.
I wasn't there to see first hand, but it looks like they reset the keel hanger bolts.
My boat has been on the market for almost a year now and no sale. Price is $6000. Wondering if maybe I should keep her and have her moved up to Lake Winnipesaukee where I am relocating.

Probably best to take her with you. Even well priced boats aren't selling right now. Iris on ebay only got one bid at $3k, but a reserve was set so it didn't sell.
It's a really tough market right now and getting top dollar is hard, especially when there's a C27 just down the road for the same price or a C30 for just a few thousand more.
