I have a Hood furling system. I put a small block on my lifeline where it attaches to the pulpit. I cored my line for about a foot so the knot is smaller.
You can cut and pull individual strands or strand pairs to taper if you have single braid. 3/16" is more than strong enough for the last few feet before the drum. Basic Sta-set has a 1200# breaking strength in 3/16.
