I am pretty much deaf in my right ear and have age (60's) appropriate hearing loss in my left ear. I singlehand most of the time and my radio, which is a 2005 Uniden Polaris 25W DSC is mounted on the bulkhead which separates the cabin from the head. I have a hard time hearing it especially if the wind is stiff. I would like to mount a speaker, either an external speaker or one closer to the cockpit. Any suggestions? Thanks.
There are a number of weatherproof speakers available and a connector on the back of the radio. If your radio is compatible with the Uniden WHAM (wireless, handheld, accessory mike), that includes a speaker and gives you full control of the radio from the cockpit. I hang mine from the backstay when underway and love it
Michael, I added a Poly Planar Remote VHF Speaker on the inside of my transom utilizing the cover over the gudgeon access hole as a mounting spot. That was several years ago and it still works great. I had an external jack on the back of my radio I utilized for the connection. I still have to go to the cabin to speak on the radio but at least I can monitor the broadcasts sufficiently to hear it over the outboard when in use.
Most speakers contain magnets. If you place a magnet near the compass, it will render the compass as useless as Capt Jack Sparrow’s. You also don’t want it near the auto helm (at least not the older versions like I have) I have a small encloses speaker I can bring out and place on the sole of the cockpit when I need it
Thanks to all for the responses. After I read Dave's post it occurred to me that I actually have a WHAM--I had just stashed it away and forgotten about it. I have located it and will give it a shot. I really hate putting holes in my boat!
Some clever previous owner of Passage added a VHF extension weatherproof speaker inside the storage area under/inside the starboard gunwale. While it sounds like someone talking through an old fashioned megaphone, you can hear the radio adequately while you're steering in the cockpit.
The speaker is mounted on the starboard side, while the compass is located on the port side cockpit bulkhead, I would imagine that the compass is adequately compensated for the speaker magnet.
