I'm thinking of getting the 7-15 wisker pole this summer. Instead of the standard mast ring I was thinking of the mast track kit. What is everyone thoughts on this.
Yes. You need to be able to adjust the inboard height of the pole. If you use roller furling, the clew height will change with how much jib you deploy. If you hank on, it will change depending on which sail you use. And, depending on point of sail and wind strength, the clew height will vary.
I think it's a good idea. A 4' section of mast track isn't very expensive, and, if you decide to get either a symetrical or a cruising spinnaker in the future, you'll already have the adjustable mast ring. If it was expensive, I'd say wait until you decide whether you want to get a spinnaker. It's really an individual judgment, based on how long you intend to keep the boat, and how likely you are to get some type of a chute.
If you get a track, try to get the molded plastic track end pieces so your lines will be less likely to hang up on the track during a tack. I feel the track is of little use on a 25 using a whisker. I would never use a pole on anything except my largest sail therefore the ring location would never change. If it is blowing hard enough to fly a working jib on a 25 when racing then you will make your best time reaching and turning down when you catch waves.
The spin pole is about 11 feet. This is useless for poling out anything but the 110 jib (if there is that much wind you don't need a pole).
If you were getting a fixed length pole and flying mainly a 135 I'd think 15 feet would be about right - but how to store that???
For a 155 you really need about 16 feet (or more). Or don't bother with a pole, just gybe downwind and sail heated up.
I don't think you need a track on the mast for a whisker pole but it is essential for a spin pole if you want to reach sometimes (pole down and forward).
We have a twist-lock whisker pole and have never had a problem with it. We also have a track on the mast and it works great. Like Frank said be sure to get the plastic end pieces.
