Who has the low down on AC coverage? Please share. I'm anxious to see some of the event.
Can you imagine the dial up with two 90' x 90' boats? I hope the teams are practicing their 720's. One penalty could cost the race. How about crossing tacks at 60 mph closing speeds.
This isn't my idea of an ideal AC but it will sure be an interesting spectacle.
So far, no announcement of TV coverage in the USA... just the rest of the world. Probably relates to why you see hardly any sailboats at many of our boat shows any more.
But there's supposed to be free, live streaming on www.americascup.com for you, me, and the 71 other Americans who might watch (as we shake off our Superbowl hangovers).
BTW, the "starting dance" should be really interesting! But I suspect one boat is just going to be too fast for the other--that's probably why they kept at best-of-three.

CET is 6 hours earlier than eastern time (4AM) and 9 hours earlier than Pacific (1AM). I was thinking I might hook up my old VCR to my PC and record it that way ;-)
The actual race might be later... Virtually every country in Europe and Asia will have it, but apparently not us--the challenging country. It's probably pre-empted by a re-run of Sunday's NASCAR race, and the usual Monday morning quarterbacks breaking down the Superbowl.
So, what's the betting? I've watched winged C-class cats race off Norwalk, CT--incredible... I like BMW/Oracle's wing, but I think Alinghi's cat design and canting mast runs away from the tri (if the lawyers allow the race to start).
I just read that BMW/Oracle has an engine that powers the hydraulics that control the wing, which has nine segments that can be shaped somewhat independently based on 26,000 data points per second going into a computer.
That's sailing, Larry Ellison style! I still think Alinghi takes it--with actual sails.

Incredible. That just completely blows. You'd think somebody would cover it.
I'd bet Ellison wins but I really think the winner will be the one that does not fail. Me... I'm praying for high winds and a safe outcome for the sailors on the one that goes over.
Wasn't the inventor of the Cat design lost at sea, his cat found turtle and he was missing.

I'd love to see a real race on real boats. 2 boats and up to 3 races doesn't make a great event. How about production boats like Farr 40's? There would be an intense qualifier competition, which is more interesting than the final duel, in my opinion. You would get a real measure of sailing and racing skills. Maybe even get back to national representation on the teams.
It is hard to relate to this legal and financial competition. The boats will probably not be evenly matched and we'll know the winner half a leg into the first race, if the boats don't break before they finish...
I'll still watch as much as I can and enjoy it. I just wish the event would get back to being a sailing competition.

I also find it interesting that after all the millions on design, tank-testing, and prototyping of hull-forms, sails, and such, those past boats would sail nose-and-nose, such that crews and tactics (and breakage or swamping) would end up deciding most of the races. This one is likely to be different--with super-secret, innovative designs, and at 30-40+ knots, one of these boats probably has several knots on the other.
