I had a 4" exhaust & intake installed, I really have no idea who makes it, and a K&M (?) filter system as well. The chip seemed to make the biggest difference as far as mileage went.

The K&N actually breathes worse than the stock Ford filter in these trucks. My daily driver truck is an '04 F250 diesel with 75,000 miles and ahs treated me fine.

When I was making a 45 mile freeway commute some years ago, I tried Slick 50 with an oil change and actually picked up 7% in gas milage. I had made no other changes at the time and I tracked my milage continuously back then. The nature of the drive made the comparison pretty reliable, so I have continued to add the stuff every 50K miles. It's just a teflon-like suspension, so it should be fine in any engine. I only picked up 2-3% in my last Grande Cherokee with the K&N filter addition, and that could vary a lot or not improve breathing at all with different engines and loads.

Looks like the Suburban wins. I thought it would. I took herself to look at replacement vehicles for the van, and she was lacklustre about trucks, but used the word "practical" when discussing the Suburban. I don't often hear that word in conversations about things I want to buy (am off base on this one??)

Anyway, I spent more time on th eweekend looking at 'Burbans, and thumbed through an owners manual on one. I was shocked to see the towing capacity listed in the owners manual is only around 6000 lbs. Thats only 500 pounds more than the Astro. Am I missing something here?

Our best contender right now is a 1999 4X4 gasoline model with the 5.7 litre engine. 1500 series. (sorry diesel guys, but the math just didn't work right, and the chevy Diesels take a beating in the ratings - not that the 'burbs are famous for reliability or anything).

We have a 1999 GMC Yukon (the GMC version of a Suburban) with that same engine and rated to tow 5700lbs. I would not recommend it. It is barely adequate towing our C250 Wing. Soon as I can buy a 3/4 ton long-bed pickup I will. That is what you need. My .02

Of course if you only tow a few miles you will be OK. I am talking about taking the thing on a highway at 55MPH or more.

By the way, we weighed our 250 fully loaded on the trailer and she came in at 6800lbs. We use an Equilizer hitch.

Get a 3/4 ton pickup. They are cheap these days.
