I purchased a 2002 Catalina 250 Wing Keel in September. I found I could not reduce the rake to the recommend 4". I lengthend the back stay as much as possible and tightened the forestay. When the back stay reached 30# on the gauge I still had 8" of rake. I checked (with a level) and the boat appears level on the trailer. The uppers and lowers are slack. The mast appears to be leaning back to much. I keep thinging the back stay is to short. Any body got suggestions? Rich
I'm Back! Love the boat. Having lots of fun sailing and overnights. There was a sugestion to wait till boat was in the water to adjust rake. The boat doesn't sit level in the water. So I'm still wondering how to get the rake set right. Rich
First, I'm dubious about your "level" reading on the trailer. Just a couple of inches fore-to-aft will throw your mast reading off by more inches. (The mast is taller than the boat is long.) I'd wait to check it in the water before doing anything rash.
But if you're right, years ago a rigger replaced the toggle on a turnbuckle on my boat to (I think) lengthen the stay by a few inches--or maybe it was to shorten it--I don't remember. You can make that replacement with the mast up--just use a halyard as a temporary stay.
Rich, wait to tune the mast until you are in the water. A 2002 model surely has the original rigging and I doubt that Catalina put the wrong length stays on your boat. Also, many C250 Wing owners place ballast in the V-berth storage area because the boat sits stern-heavy in the water. I have 275 lbs of bagged crushed rock in mine and that puts my C250 Wing flat in the water. With the added bow weight she sits on her lines and performs beautifully. Search the C250 forum and archive for "ballast." Welcome to the forum.
Thanks Guys! I'll have another go at it in the spring when its in the water. All the boats are comming out of the water here in up-state NY. I had about four weeks to sail and enjoyed the boat very much. I did notice the bow is quite high and some rounding up in strong wind. Thanks Rich
It made a big difference on JD. Mind, we have installed a 2nd battery, have wheel steering with pedestal guard, carry a 2kw generator on the fuel locker, and I keep the mast support post in place all the time.
