Indiscipline placed 2nd in the Catalina fleet of about 8 boats yesterday, behind a well sailed Catalina 27 by 3 minutes 44 seconds. We placed 3rd overall (in all fleets) behind a 40 footer and the C27 in a combined fleet of about 15. We beat both boats I've been crewing on and beat the Catalina 30 fleet scratch.

Friday night I sailed to the La Playa cove anchorage. I left my slip at 5:45 PM and was anchored and eating a Subway sandwitch by 10 PM. I sailed most of the way and had Happy Hour on the water watching the sunset on the longest day of the year. It's been scortching hot here in San Diego.

On race morning I picked up my crew - 2 guys from the office, Wes, a green young man whose been practicing with me and David, a hot driver on a locally raced J105 whose experience and competitive edge really helped our effort.

Winds were very light and the race was totally in the bay with about 15 marks, what we call a "hot dog" or "sausage" race - many laps around various combinations of buoys.

Indiscipline got a good start. I was doing bow, Wes pit and David driving. David generally took a few more risks then I would have, sailed closer to obstructions and crossed other boats more aggressively. This course started upwind, we were all close at the mark, then a beam reach across the bay, and about a 1 mile downwind leg. We set the spin at the 2nd mark and were first to round the 3rd mark. We were in a fleet of Catalina 27, 30, 34, 36 and a 38. Most of these boats are non-spin. We had a spin hoist, gybe and douse on every downwind leg so I was getting a good workout.

The bigger boats passed us on the windward legs and we came right back and passed them downwind. We stayed close with the leaders at all times.

On the 2nd lap upwind leg, the wind went to zero, then came up faintly from behind. We quickly set spin for the 3rd time in the race and were the only boat to do so. The Race Committee shortened the course, abandoning the final lap, motored to setup a new finish line.

We pulled away from the C30 I crew on for the Beer Cans, caught the big boat leaders, and rounded the final mark within 4 inches in about 2 knots of breeze.

I really thought I had 1st and I was a little dissapointed to be handed the 2nd place trophy in the Yacht Club - we were not quite close enough to the C27 to correct over him (even though I get 30 seconds per mile).

It was real hit and miss there at the end and many of the slower boats were DNF as the wind never filled back in until much later.

Bought my crew a well deserved round at the club bar, ate some food from the great spread they put out, and motor sailed home, arriving around 8 PM.

David, the driver on the J105 Air Boss, had a really good time on my boat and I think he'll come again for the July race. On July 19 - 20 we race from San Diego to Mission Bay, have a beach party, and race back the next day.

I am also doing a charity where police with sailboats take dis advantaged kids sailing, that is July 12.

July 25 I leave for my 3 week voyage to Catalina and the Channel Islands.

It will be a busy month!

Very impressive...congrats!!
I know how tough to sail in such little wind, when our little boats pitch around in the waves and spill the wind out of the sails.
Very nice story. Thanks for sharing.

LUV IT! Hot damn...Show the big boys that their toys ain't as cool as good ole fashioned expertise. I was a racer, once upon a time with my Frers 30 and got my ass kicked a couple of times by boats with better drivers. I still remember those whoopings and try to stay focused on sail trim. Tough when you are cruising and making eggs benedict, changing the oil, and making moves on the wife all at 6 knots. Oh and in 9 knots of wind at best, variable with a 2 knot current!

Forgot to include this in my last post. BUT DUDE MAN - THAT is too cool... The sailing world is dying in my opinion. I met only one black guy sailing in now over a year of cruising. Admitedly, the jewish fellow on the C38 with the family of 4 and the Newfy and the cat who was having his Rabbi help install the windvane was also unusually random by cruising demographic standards. But my point is, this was a rich man's sport popularized by the likes of Bill Butler - yes I did own a C25 and will again, for those concerned about my opinions of the C470 who hit me - and now the reverse is happening. Teach those kids that there is a place where teamwork and straightforward thinking still prevails - and that fuel is only required when you are in a hurry!

Be good - do good. Thanks for that!

Indiscipline III turns 30 years old in October, and I'd really like to give her a 1st place trophy!

Those big boys with big boats have more money than me. But no one: practices more, sails more, does more with less, comes all the way from Mission Bay - stays overnight - sails back after the race.

Right now I am doing about 6 races per month - in other people's boats. I am learning everything I can from these guys, and they all have something to teach.
