This is my anchors and ground tackle setup. I removed the anchor locker lid because if and when I have to drop the hook I want to drop it RIGHT NOW! I switched the Danforth for a Bruce which holds in both sand and rocks.
This is my "lunch hook", a small Danforth, the chain and rode coiled in a BoatUS bucket.
That would be a twisted ankle waiting to happen for me but, I see its advantages. The furler keeps you off the foredeck most of the time I guess. What about rain? Worried about the scuppers clogging and the rode staying wet?
Frank, if my memory serves me correct, didnt it rain like cats and dogs couple weeks ago. Put the lid back on before you break a leg or trip. If you want to use the anchor NOW, get one of those brackets mentioned in this forum and mount it and then prop open the lid slightly. Steve A
As I see it, the rain just runs off the lid and down into the crack around it into the locker, and if anything, the lid retards the drying process... And sun is not that much of a threat to 1/2" nylon rope. But the lid also keeps the rode in the locker in the event of a broach, or even a big wave over the bow. It doesn't take much to flip it open--I'd leave it on.
