I got rudely woken up this morning at about 6:00 AM by a police officer knocking on my door.(Just how you want to get woken up) He gave me the number for an office that was down at our marina holding a guy they caught stealing motors off boats. It turned out that my motor wasn't one of them. I had taken my motor off and put it down in the cabin, so they didn't see a motor on it and thought my boat was one that was missing a motor. They had an 8 horse Honda 4 stoke, but mine is a 5 horse.
The first thing I did when I bought my boat was get a cable lock to put on the motor. I felt like I was being a little paranoid because none of the other boats seem to have locks on their motor, but I thought if someone comes along to steal a motor maybe they would pass on mine because they would have to cut the lock and move on to easier pickings.
I used one of those channel de4vices that slides over and locks the two handles. Trouble was, at the end of this season, the key wouldn't turn in the lock...we used a hack saw to cut through the end of the steel bar and slid it off the other direction...didn't take long or much effort...guess all of these devices can only be a discouragement, but nothing is guaranteed... Happy New Year to all!!!
I am in the same marina as Dan, and heard the story this morning. One of our liveaboards got called into work at 3:30AM. She saw somebody fiddling with outboard motors at that time of morning, and called the police. The police came, but could not get into the marina because of the gate lock. So they waited at the gate (only way out) and the guy came out wheeling two outboard motors. They promptly arrested him.
Sometimes the good guys win.
No, wasn't my motor. My motor is bolted to the bracket which is bolted to the transom, making it just a little more difficult than the next boat down the line (which in Dan's, so the next boat after that ;-) I hope...
