Has anyone had a sail re-cut to fit a furler? I have a brand new 150 that is hank on. I am thinking about having it modified to fit a furler. Any thoughts or comments? Anything I should be looking at specifically? Thanks everyone, Dan
For racing? If not, generally a roller-furling sail has a higher clew than many hank-on gennies. Your sailmaker will want to know how far back your genoa cars can go--that will indicate how high the clew can be. A sailmaker I talked to didn't like Sunbrella sun guards on furling sails--he said the sail (especially a new one) will stretch a little more than the Sunbrella, causing the sail to "cup". His choice, Treated dacron, on the other hand doesn't seem to last as long (but looks better IMHO). And often the stitching holding Sunbrella gives out before the fabric. Oh well, Old Sol always wins out in the end...
Also if not racing, another thing I'd consider is cutting it down to a 135, which will give you a nice cruising genny and won't lose its shape as much if you need to reef it down to 90-100. A foam luff tape also helps with shape when reefing--your sailmaker can advise on that.
