I've completed a personal goal, today I clocked over 1000 miles sailed since daylight saving time began March 11. The log is now at 1007 miles, in about 400 hours, since daylight savings time started.

Had a great practice for the San Diego - Ensenada race with Joe (Sloopsmitten) today. Flew the spin in about 12 knots of wind on a close beam reach down to San Diego bay. The hoist was ugly but I figured out what I've been doing wrong. Did a nice gybe to run downwind into the bay. Dropped spin, up with the 150 and took one or two tacks to sail back to Mission Bay, then went up spin again (near perfect hoist and good teamwork the second time). Ran 3 miles back to Mission Bay at times near 7 knots surfing with lots of wind in the kite.

Did a good drop in the channel and motored in - about 5 to 6 hours at sea today.

Joe and I will be in PHRF double handed division San Diego - Ensenada (65 miles) on Oct. 5 in 2 weeks, then 2 Around Todos Santos Islands (15 miles) in the Todos Santos Regatta Oct. 7, then a long hard beat back home Monday Oct. 8. Should log about 250 miles in 4 days for that series.

This has been a busy year, I have not gotten sailing as much as normal.

then next goal is to finish the race, and bring home a mug (what passes for trophies in this race). I'd be very happy to just finish.

Congratulations on ...what being in the 1000 mile club ?!

Is this like bike riding when they have a 5000 mile club but...sometimes they allow 10% less for mountain bikes because of the extra resistance. If so...then maybe I could qualify for the 1000 mile club if I get a little allowance for old sails, slime on the bottom....and maybe I can think of one or two addl things...maybe I can qualify also for the 1000 mile club.....maybe

Its a good idea, lets start a club. Sail 1000 miles in a C25 or 250 in a year. I did it in 7 months, so I've set the bar.

You get to put a star on your National Association Burgee or something.

Congratulations Jim, Unfortunately those of us up north are working under a weather handicap, even so I think next season I'll leave the gps acculated miles on all season just to see WHAT GIVES HERE. Today I did 13 miles nautical while dragging some lures around the bay, Caught a lot of seaweed but no fish. Oh well! Had to be home to rescue the 11 yr. old from the routine of the school bus.

Fortunetely for us there are the likes of fellows like youself to challenge the likes of us to see what we are up to.

Great job Jim.

Do these miles include sailing with the iron jenny too?

Yes, but I don't think I have more than 150 miles under power. On a typical day sail I motor out of the slip and 1/2 mile more and that is about it. That is why my average speed was so low. I did motor about 60 miles total on my summer cruise to Mexico.

Also, all but about 50 - 75 miles were single handed.

Impressive.

I'd like to join the 1000 mile club.
let's see, that would be 157 trips from my mooring ball down to the other end of our lake and back.

We are going to have to come up with a good set of rules regarding this 1000 mile club. I can just see some adding the GPS tracking while at anchor overnight to their totals. I guess I am willing to sacrifice getting a 10% break on the 1000 miles for slime and old sails if others are willing to give up miles counted for trailoring. We will have to put it to a vote as to whether to count motoring with or without sails up...if that should be counted into the totals. Also....how do we judge ths...some of youse guys get pretty aggressive with your postings and bet you are same when it comes to figuring out this mileage thing. I guess you have to have a lot of trust in this.

By the way...is the Association willing to give those in the 1000 mile club a free custom styled logo for supporting a sanctioned club/event ?

Oscar,

You indicated " almost did, 1000 miles in 5 days in April....missed it by 12 hours. "
How did you do this ? 5 days plus 12 hours is 132 hours non-stop round the clock. That works out to a constant speed of 7.58 mph or what is that in knots...something like...6.9 knots. Doesn't that exceed the normal max speed of a Catalina ? What you being towed by TowBoat US during these 5+ days ?

Jim,

I've been thinking, with as much sailing as you do, I would think that you would have accumulated more than 1,000 miles in six months.

Last weekend I put in about 100 miles, drag raced to Vomit Island and back on Sunday, and with all the time off I had in August, I probably have 1,000 miles in the last two months.

1000 miles at an average 4mph = 250 hours... or about a solid month's worth of sailing - full 8 hour days.

Clam,

If you only average 3kts when sailing, you should try it without your anchor deployed.

The devil's in the averages. For every blustery day, there's a drifter to compensate. :>)

Depends on the venue. The wind where I sail is as dependable as old faithful. Tomorrow's wind looks like its going to be 16mph for a good part of the day.
