I cannot get my head to take in water. It flushes OK if you dump water in. I believe it is the origional unit and I was thinking of replacing it. Does anyone have any suggestions on type or brand? Are they all standard size? I was going to get a manual one. I do not see that Catalina direct sells them. Thanks.

I usually steer people toward this forum but, in this case, you might want to post this on the CatalinaOwners.com forum.

http://www.sailboatowners.com/forums/yesterday.tpl?fno=34&shsite=CO&startat=1&start=1&xbrand=Catalina&stop=0000001000000

There's a member there called the "Head Mistress" Seems that she has all the head answers. She's even written a book on the subject. She might be able to help you make the repairs you need.

Other than that, WM has heads. I would imagine Catalina Direct has them.

I'd take a serious look at a porta-potti. I thought that I might want to replace my porta-potti with a "real" marine head but, I can't imagine that it would be more convenient. Look at NautiDuck's pump out for his and I think you'll have the best of both worlds.

We just replaced ours with a unit from West Marine. The repair kit (gaskets, etc.) for the original was $70, a new one was a little over a hundred. 4 screws and it swapped out and works great.

Silly question, but did you make sure the intake is open and theat the thru hull is clear of "stuff"?

Do you have the optional vanity sink?

If so, you might need to put a plug in the sink to get suction on the water intake.

Earlier this season, my intake hose on the back of the pump assembly had come loose and popped off preventing flush water from getting to the pump.

We replaced our head about 4 years ago (Jabsco) and it has performed well although had the budget allowed at the time I would have purchased the Raritan. This year we could not get the head to prime on its own even by closing off the sink drain, etc. Pulled the pump assembly apart, applied a little vasoline to the piston seals, reassambled the pump and away we go. Worked like a charm. Cost: about 15min. If priming is the only issue, this might be worth a try before spending too much on a new head.

My head isn't drawing water either. But I'm thinking a little head lube might do the trick. At any rate make sure you check all the cheap stuff before doing the expensive stuff

Same problem a couple of years ago...not drawing any water. I went over the side and found the intake plugged with barnacles and other great gunk. I solved the problem by carefully cleaning out the intake with a small screwdriver.

Same problem here. We have been taking a pint of water with us to the head. Gonna try the sink next time we are at the boat.

Ooops I mean gonna try to plug the sink drain next time we are at the boat.
