I've borrowed a trailer for my tall rig, fin keel and want to pull her out of the water for a bottom job. Any tips/traps to note as I get her onto the trailer? I'll yank her out of the water and let a friend tow her to my house - he's got the big wheels.
Hi folks, it's me again...I got the boat on the trailer just fine. Well, it took me about five hours to get her comfortably on the trailer - just a lot of slow going adjusting the pads, working the boat forward on the trailer, etc. (I could routinely launch and sail my Catalina-22 in 30 minutes).
Here's my next question - do I need to strap the boat down on the trailer, or does the low center of gravity on a Fin keel Catalina-25 make this unecessary? Thanks for your thoughts and recemmendations
Yes, you want to strap the boat onto the trailer. Otherwise, the boat can jump up 'n down as the road, pot holes, railroad tracks, etc make the trailer hop.
My PO gave me 4 straps with the boat. One at each cleat down to the boat. Seemed to work just fine. Also, had some old white shirts where the straps might score the hull. I do like the idea of twisting the straps. How much do you do it?
If the trailer has sat for awhile and you are going to tow some distance ....in perhaps hot weather check the wheel hubs to make sure the bearings are greased well and not dry. Oh yes ....about the brakes that you will need.... not for your competent friend who's hauling but the #&@* who cuts him off in traffic and he has to stop 8K in a hurry! Please remove the rudder so it doesn't rip off if you drive up into a steep drive way. Finally your friend needs a steak dinner with sufficient refreshments since you entrusted him to deliver your passion to your door step (plus gas). Ron
