Chick-a-pea made it to another MUG Race, all-be-it with more sail repair tape on the jib for the third year straight. We had to take a DNF as did 51 others. But we had fun none the less. Caught up with Pretty Penny II and her crew Friday night and also Halcyon. So Fleet 25 had three entries.
We got underway from Amity at noon on Friday. Would have liked to have made the half-way party at Green Cove Springs Marina Thursday night but I had a dentist appt. Friday morning that I had put off once and it takes forever to reschedule. So we headed South the thirty-three miles to Palatka. Wind was East and fresh as we stayed on a port tack for about 24 nm. doing five and six knots. There was only one other sailboat headed our way so I was afraid nobody was going to race. But after arriving in Palatka we found the docks full up. The other sailboat had motored ahead and had an all female crew so they had no trouble finding a spot. We ended up going to the South side of the US-17 bridge were Brian lets us raft up to his C-270. My crew, Brett, who has a Herreshoff 18 sailed with me. He took off on foot around the small town while I went to the skippers meeting at the amphitheater.
At the meeting I found Jerry and Spencer and Tom and Kevin. Jerry had Jamie crewing for him who happens to work with my wife Bonnie. It’s a small world after all. Tom of Knotty Cat was also there with his son Kevin form HOTlanta. And Spencer of Halcyon was there. Of course all the admirals were also there, except mine.
I had been too busy this year to clean my bottom even though I had it painted last Summer. So it was a little hairy.
There wasn’t much wind on Saturday morning. My other crew Rod who has a Fortune 30 met us at the dock and we shoved off. Start time for Chick-a-pea was 080244. I thought we did pretty good strategically as we managed to clear a few points in the river without extra tacking. But after eight miles or so what wind we had just vanished. Around one o’clock we had gone eight nm. I decided to abandon the race so we could get back before dark. After an hour of motoring the wind started to build until there were white caps. Still we didn’t get back to Amity until 1730 hrs. And I had to drive Rod back down to Palatka to get his truck. It was 2130 before I had Chick-a-pea put to bed and 2300 when I made it home.
You know when I live in Orange Park there always ust to be a lot of wind for the Mug Race, but for the last two years the wind gods haven't been very kind! One of these years I hope you guys have better wind!
I don't know when you lived in OP, must have been on 03, but I have sailed this Race for the last 15 years and finsished just seven times do to the lack of wind. Two years ago only three boats finished out of 180. This year at least one in our fleet happened to be in the right place at the right time, caught the puffs and then the wind as it built further up the course and finish third in RCHSNB. Congraulation go out to Spencer and Becky Wait for their third place finish out of 18 boats.
