It looks as though we will make it to the B.E.E.R Cruise in June, a pricey drive but even the Admiral is keen to meet up with some other sailboats (she already has her own 'sailor')
So, if we can plug that much cash into a trip, I thought.. why not setup a sofla cruise for assoc members at a fraction of the cost as well.
Here's an itinery:
D1: Launch from Blackpoint Marina(BPM) on Biscayne Bay Meet up at Sands Key anchorage. 7.5nm D2: Sail south to Pumpkin Key 13nm D3: Sail/motor out through Angel Fish Creek to the big water. Sail down to John Pennekamp State park(JPSP) 22nm+ D4: Day sail to Rodregiez key, return to JPSP 5nm D5: Sail back to the bay via Angel fish creek 22nm+ D6: Sail back to BPM and pull 13nm
Leaving out JPSP would make it a 4 day cruise.
Sometime in November 07
Alternative route: D1: Launch BPM to Sands Key D2: North to No Name Harbor D3: South to Boca Cheta Key D4: Back to BPM
Other potential stops: Elliott Key (bathrooms & showers) Billy's Point (anchorage)
So we would provide our own entertainment, raft ups, etc. All of the places are accessible by a WB pretty much most of the time, and WK at the right time
Parking for Truck & Trailer at BPM is $10 per night (or $120 per year - great value for us)
JPSP is about a 20 min walk from West Marine and dinners, and bike ride to the food stores/ dinners. Don't know if they have Taxicabs handy.
Couldn't believe you mentioned Pumpkin Key Paul, I dragged an anchor there in 1985 on a C-22. Came close but didn't hit anyone. BRING THE DANFORTH! I'm beginning to see that trailering can have it's advantages ........ sounds like a great time!
Dave, you are spot on about the anchoring off Pumpkin key. We threw out two anchors one very blustery day on the lee of the island, we still dragged. Had to lift and shift twice before we held for the night.
There was a big hunter nearby, and we watched as they dragged towards us (they were dragging quicker!).
The anchorage at Sands Key is pretty soft too, but it's well sheltered.
We always put set the anchor alarm (on the Garmin 192C). It's enlightening to view the swings on the plot after a night at anchor.
I know there are more 25's/250's around here somewhere!
We had to hunker down in the lee of Pumpkin Key also on our Bimini trip. It was the first time I met John & Laura. It was a fresh breeze and we had to motor straight into it taking the channel from Bay Front Park. John rafted up to us and he was soaking wet from bow spray. I would love to be able to go down there again, but work is keeping me busy right now. I am taking this Friday off so I can get in the MUG Race.
