It's time to set a date and location of a designation for the San Juan Forum Cruisers. We wrote about this earlier and to help boats new to the area set up escorts or partner boats we could chose a place and dates. A VHF schedule could be set to keep in touch for information and best spots for landings. I could be trailering by myself and hooking up with another crew would be safer. Traveling up interstate 5 is ok but better to partner. The Marina of choice is Cap Sante with new launch hoist and WM within walking distance. My proposed take off date in 26 or 27 June from Northern California. July 4th is on a Wednesday so weekends are busy but we have fit in before and the date for get together could be July 1st or 7th at Cap Sante Marina?
The Admiral and I plan a couple of weeks in the San Juans, our first trip. We were hoping for the last two weeks of June to avoid crowds - Seattle Schools go until late June due to many "snow days" this year. What is your experience with summer sailing in the San Juans?
Schedules are very hard to make but hoping through our Forum we can get folks together. Mine is lined up so son=in-law can go the first week so Granddaughter can also fit her schedule. I have come to the San Juans the 2nd week of June for a two week cruise and never saw a cloud. Now I like to visit for 4 plus weeks and have experienced all the weather possible and I don't like lightening. I have tried to have a 2nd or third destination each day or just stay anchored as the weather changes. I will include this cruise several breaks to visit my Dad in Abbotsford, BC, who turned 101 last month. I hope to get to meet and visit with Forum members this cruise with the help of the Great Forum.
I have most weekends open for the next 2 months. I am planning a multi-day trip to the San-Juans sometime between 15-30 June. I would like to do 4-5 days. I will be back to cruise around Sept 10. Living up here, it is an easy 1 day trip to the islands. I hope to see you all up here.
My schedule might change by allowing an earlier take off so Tom I might be able to catch up to you. I will check in with the schedule as soon as I know my travel start. I will be starting at Cap Sante after food is stored and tanks full. Blind Bay?
Do you have favorites in the SJ's. I have only found time for day sailing since moving up here. I fly all over the Islands and see nearly every island has a decent dock for shore excursions. I am really looking forward to this little trip. If you need help getting rigged and launched, I would be happy to help.
Yes I have favorites. The destinations depend on wind and weather. I read Waggoner and keep it handy to make changes if the conditions change. It does take me a day to get sea legs and help launching is always appreciated. If the area is busy getting the truck and trailer out of the hoist area is a real help. I put the boat in a slip for the first night which is where I raise the mast and rig then load up on the provisions. I keep the load as light as possible for road travel and launch. The dingy launch is another need for help but with boaters at the marina to help it becomes a meeting of new and old friends. I have been able to launch, raise the mast and rig by myself but it's more fun to share and it's safer. Hope we connect. I will email the celphone #.
We leave from Lake Almanor on July 8th with overnight stop in Grants Pass to meet up with friends who will be joining us on their boat. We hope to be in Anacortes on 9th or 10th and in the water soon thereafter. No fixed plans but will work our way through San Juans/Gulf Is. and cross Geogia Straits from Nanaimo and on to Desolation Sounds, not sure we will do Princess Louisa this time but it is always tempting. Hope to meet up with many of you along the way. Jim on Sweetcraft, we are now on mooring off Lake Almanor West, it would be great to sail with you before we go North...give us a yell when you are in the water and maybe we can rendezvous...Dave
Dave, Maybe we will connect again in the Gulf Islands with other Forum Members too. I am not on any schedule for the summer cruise so could even be in Anacortes on the 10th. Here's hoping we have clear skies and fair winds. I am now not going to launch here at Lake Almanor which does make my preparing for the trip easier. Maybe I could get a sail out of the West side so I could start getting my sea legs?
My departure date from here is set, 27 June, which puts me near Eugene the first evening. I want to make Anacortes by Friday and plan to get off Interstate 5 during the rush hours. It should be easier to travel during the week and I have been through Seattle during the weekend. The trip is 750 miles and gets a little longer each year. I want to stay on the trailer in Anacortes until I visit Canada for a couple of days with launch day possible on 2 July or 3 July. First stop at Blind Bay and see who's there.
Our departure date for Anacortes continues to be July 8th. We hope to be in Anacortes on the 9th. We also plan to be in Blind Bay the first night and on to Nanaimo after stays in various places. Sorry I did not get back to you Jim but I had a minor injury that interrupted my sailing for awhile but I am better now. Time is getting short so I am about to pull boat out of water for preparation for trip. See you up North...Dave
Sorry to hear about your bump. Yes I am almost ready. Have had trouble getting on the Forum but it looks like everything is working. Haven't heard from anyone yet trying to make the cruise get together other than you guys and me. You might just see me at Blind Bay.
