practical sailor did something on stainless cleaners. they picked a cleaner with pads ( forgot the name, it was the only one that wasn't liquid ). the liquid makes a mess of the fiberglass black smudges.
So I bought never dull it was OK nothing to spill . you have to go back over it with a clean rag.
it seems the liquid got the heaver rust better though.
you can use 0000 ultrafine steal wool for real heavy spots .or car shops have brass wool (softer)

IMHO Brass wool (actually I think it's called BRONZE WOOL. Brass wool is a diferent product made of impregnated fiber used to polish Brass) is better than steel wool for boat work because any particals that flake off the steel wool and get caught in corners and cracks of the deck will eventually leave rust stains The bronze wool is non-ferrous and won't rust.
