The winches I ended up with for my jib sheets are old Lewmar #8's. Single speed standard winches. However, they use the old 5/8" winch handle that is nowhere to be found at any cost. The winches are nice but not perfect.

I can:
1) Use these winches and make handles to fit and work.
2) Buy different winches off of eBay or wherever, (there are some Barient #22's for $400.00ish)
3) Buy brand new Lewmar #16CST 2 speed for $439.00 each
4) Buy brand new #14CST single speeds for not a lot less.
I will be sailing single handing a lot. I have a tiller pilot.
Do I need self tailing winches?
I have a #6 Lewmar for the halyards on the cabin top and it takes the 3/4" drive handle available everywhere. Now I need two handles.
What would you do?

The Lewmar 7s are excellent winches for our boats, I have had 7s and 16st and the 7 work fine. I would buy 7s in the cheapest material they make and sell the 8s to someone who needs them.

My $.0.02:
1. ST winches are by no means a requirement to solo, but they do make the job a bit easier. Had 'em on my CP26 and liked 'em. Dont have 'em on my CP25 - no big deal but I race and rarely solo this boat. For a short handed or solo boat, I'd prefer STs.
2. Diff winch handles - I'd vote NO. Everything on the boat should ideally serve multiple purposes, not the other way around. Yes, you should have 2 handles, but both should fit EVERY winch on board.
3. 2-speed primaries. Didnt have 'em on the CP26 and didnt miss 'em. DO have 'em on the CP25, and will probably ALWAYS have 2-speed primaries from now on.

Keep it simple. You do not need self tailing winches, unless you have the money to afford them. For $40 you can buy Winchers and essentially take nonST work for you. I singlehanded my C25 for 11 years with them and the next owner still has them. If you can afford ST, by all means buy them.

All you need is two winch handles that fit your jib winches. The second is for when the first goes overboard.

Two speeds are nice but not necessary for a C25. Your call based on $$$.

For the $$$$ I would try to get a handle for the one you have. Sailorman, Mannys, Boaters exchange,ETC are used suppliers that might have the odd-duck thing you need. An hour on the internet may provide you with what you need.

If that does not work, Take the winch to Sears and see if there is an adaptor that will work. that could be welded to a regular winch handle. A good machine shop should be able to take a standard handle and make it work as well. Those are all options. You could always keep your eyes open for a new set but good luck finding any.

Self Tailors and single handing are a good match though certainly not needed. I cross sheet when I single hand, not sure the C25 is set up in such a way that you can do that.
Floating and locking winch handles don't cost that much more either.

Dan,

Defender has one Lewmar winch handle with a 5/8" stud (Defender part number 606895) on their clearance list for March/April. It's kind of pricey! $110.00, but you wouldn't have to change out your winches.

Apparently, Lewmar stopped making winches with making 5/8" sockets in 1972 which makes your winches somewhat vintage...

From the Lewmar website...

Do all winches have the same size handle sockets?

Yes, after 1972 all winches and handles have the international standard sockets.
Lewmar is still manufacturing a 5/8" drive stud winch handle (part number 29141251) for those winches that had a four point main spindle. It is available in chrome with the lock in assembly.

The forum to the rescue again! Nice work. That is pricey, but cheaper than $400 + a pop for new ones. Regular winch handles are not cheap either.

Oh, Now you tell me
I bought two #7 winches today based on Franks recomendations. Picked em up off eBay. (Yes, I used our link.)
I was ready to buy two new #7s from Defender. They have a great price on them.
Maybe I'll call defender and see if I can get a real good deal on the handle to go with these winches when I sell them.
Anybody need some Lewmar #8's?
Thanks Everyone.
