After almost a year of waiting for a simple repair job from last years storm damage I'm launching the boat to take it to my winter storage yard. (the yard where it was "repaired" is a mess and the job still isn't complete. I'm taking the boat as-is and will learn to do the work myself- gelcoat scratches, sanding and repainting rudder, etc.)

Since the engine also had an overhaul I'm not sure about what steps I need to take to ensure safe starting and running of the engine. I will check oil level and make sure that it is full but besides that is there anything else I need to do before running it? Can I just attach the battery cable and gas line and just start it? (It's a '99 Honda 9.9hp Four Stroke pull start) Also in regards to the battery - I'm sure it's dead from sitting there all summer- can I get it fully charged by the engine? I'll be running the engine for most of the trip over the weekend (about 8-10 hours) Will that give me a sufficient charge to run lights and radio or do I need to remove the battery and take it to be bench charged? Thanks in advance for your help. --

DrDre,
You mention the engine has been overhauled so I would think the cylinders were lubed but, just in case, I would pull the plugs and squirt a teaspoon of motor oil in each one and crank the engine over, with the plugs reinserted and the spark plugs wires disconnected, so the rings do not gouge the cylinders. Other then that I would worry about the carb having had fuel left in it that may have dried up and left a mess. If so, you mnight need to clean the carb bowl. Other than that you should be able to fire it up and let it idle a while. If the battery has been dead all summer it might be dead for good. The engine might supply enough current to run lights while the engine is running but you may find yourself without power if you shut the engine down. Might be better to go ahead and replace it or borrow one from someone if you don't want to make that investment right before winter. An auto parts shop should be able to give you an idea of the life left in it.

Thanks Joe. I'll go now and give it a shot. You're right about the battery, it's not holding a charge for very long. Radio and lights only work with engine running. I'll replace it in the spring and will only use instruments etc. with engine on. thanks again.
