My Standard Horizon speed and depth instument covers bought the farm last year and Standard Horizon no longer has them. I tried everything I could think of to buy or fabricate new covers to no avail. Fianlly, someone mentioned roudn 4" analog instruments by SR Mariner in another thread. So, taking a chance I spent $3.50 plus shipping in the hope that they would fit my meters. Unfortunately they are a fraction too small.Ah well, I have box full of such boat parts. Some day I'll have a nice garage sail and sell it all.
If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate a heads up.
You can buy a bottle of Liquid rubber. Just smear the instrument with a suitable release agent (powder, gel, etc.) then paint the instument with the latex, making lots of layers, don't try to do it in one or two layers, won't work, think about 10 or 12 layers. The more thin layers the stronger the result. You could put a loop of thread around the instrument after the first couple of layers and then continue to build up the fresh layers to include the loop. You'll end up with a handy rubber loop to hang them on a hook. I had to do something like this to make a waterproof cap for a project I was involved in thr navy many years ago. There are probably better materials available today.
You could do the same thing with fiberglass and resin for a stiffer product.
I knew that someone in our boat club was using some type of containers for food that fit his instruments. I emailed him and here is what he said...
' The containers are made by Ziploc. I do not have the label, but I think they are called medium bowls. The containers say 1.75 cup, 14 oz. They are not difficult to find, since they are about the only round containers. The only difference is that they come in different depths for different volumes. The short ones work fine.'
Or you can look up Long Island Yacht Services, in Huntington Long Island. They have all these odd ball covers, including those from datamarine. I do not have their number handy but Im sure they are listed, or drop me an e-mail frich1230@optonline.net
Another possibility that may work is to check the dimensions of the Beckson Vent cover that also has an accessory that can fit inside (a small storage pouch). West Marine has it on the shelves and in their catalog. It was one of the things I was considering when replacing my SR Mariner Analog depthfinder hole. I wound up going another route - made my own circular patch out of Starboard and on the inside mounted another Starboard to attach a swing arm for my fishfinder. But believe the Beckson Vent Cover is approx 4" and you can buy one and return it if it does not match up to your liking.

Believe it or not, you can buy covers for both the original equipment instruments from West Marine. I bought two sets: one when I first bought the boat, and another when the first set disappeared. You'll need a good-sized store to carry them. They're about $10 each.

Thanks for the fresh ideas. I had checked the Ziplock idea but couldn't find the correct size. That sounds like a good bet if i can find the 1.75 oz. size.
I had the same issue searching for Standard Horizon instrument covers. Mine got sun baked and cracked and then dissintegrated. My first thought was "no problem" should be easy to find a replacement. So, I scoured the shelves at my local grocery store looking for a container with a matching lid. Hmmmm more difficult than I had expected. Finally, I went to a Sam's Club (thinking bulk food size) and found ones that fit on bulk candy bins. I have new covers and plenty of candy for sailing guests....PLENTY! Now I'm going to look for the Zip-Loc lids and have some spares!
