I am seeing chaffing and stray threads developing along the foot of my roller fulring 150 Genoa. Does anyone have a recommendation on how to maintenance this. Would singing off the threads with a small flame be an option.
First, I'd advise against using a flame of any size to control shredding of the foot of your jib. I think I'd check r to see if the sail is riding properly along its trek to and from the furler. It's better to determine the cause of the problem before trying to cure it only to have the problem repeat itself, or so it seems to me.
If the jib is a deck scrubber that may be the cause of the schredding, or it may be chaffing against the shrouds. Not having seen the boat makes analysing your problem a questionable thing at best.
Good Luck and lets hear from you as you resolve this issue.
Other possible causes of thread failure might be that the wrong thread was used to repair the sail in the past, or, the thread might be deteriorating from exposure to the sun. In any case, it shouldn't be expensive to have the sail partially or completely re-stitched. If it looks like chafe caused the stitches to fail, then you only need to have it re-stitched there, but if it's an old sail that has had a lot of exposure to ultraviolet light, then the whole sail should probably be re-stitched, if the sail is worth the cost. A very good quality old sail might well be worth it.
