is the round knotmeter set in wood on the starboard side of my cockpit standard from the factory? The wood looks the same as the other wood, so I am assuming so. Has anyone ever replaced it? My display is ruined. You can read the 10ths measurement, but not the full knots reading. Where do I find a replacement for that unit? I didn't see one at West Marine or Catalina Direct. Did I miss it?

it is probably not original. There are very very very few round units in that same size anymore. I am looking for one too.

Your best bet might be buying a smaller model and mounting some sort of teak around it so that if fits the hole.

SR Mariner makes a unit that fits a 4 inch opening - is that about the size you need?

the size looks good, and I think I like the analog better than the digital. I wonder if they make a barebones model? It appears that for $130 I would be getting a solar power system and a transducer that I don't need. I'll do some checking. Thanks!

Yeah, I don't know why the description mentions 'solar' as I don't think that it is. I believe this is the same unit I have on my 22. You could check with SRMariner www.srmariner.com

that's a good idea as well. thanks! I know everything else works, as I see the tenths column changing. I hadn't even thought of that. I'll check into that also when I pull it out.

I just visited the SRMariner web site. To my surprise, they have replacement round 4" instrument covers. They are the only place I've found that has them. I'm hoping they will fit my Standard Horizon speed and depth instruments. I'll report after I recieve and try them out.

The bigger question is will the transducer fit the current hole?

that's another reason I'm thinking that replacing the digital display, if possible, is the best idea.

I am guessing it has a solar panel as the display face (like the solar watches).

Someone in our boat club found that Gladware food containers fit their instruments nicely as inexpensive covers.

Speaking of the original analog knot meters...our display is in fine condition, but the spinning thru hull wheel is not. When we bottom painted last fall we tried to loosen the wheel, but it kept getting stuck. Our knot meter is basically useless. Any suggestions on where to get another thru-hull replacement? SR Mariner?

Cate,

Have you pulled your sending unit and removed the pin upon which the wheel spins? If so it can be revitalized with an old toothbrush. If the wheel and pin have been painted the pin must be removed, probably the cause of the problem. The wheel and the pin area should be kept clean and free of anything that might impede the wheel's ability to spin. I just claened my sending unit and found in addition to the slime that "BINDS" several baby barnacles which had to be scraped off with a small knife blade. They have a blank impeller plug to be installed for the purpose of cleaning the area while in water. Removing the sending unit, "in water", is a little spookie the first time you do it because it allows alot of water in if you are not quick of hand to cover the hole in the boat and put the plug in.
