Do your spreaders move forward and aft slightly? When my rig was taken down for moving, I saw that the spreader brackets had rigging tape on them, probably to firm them up. Now that the rig is back up, the port spreader shifts slightly when under sail. Wondering if I have reason to be concerned.
Mine do, at least with the rig down (I've still not managed to get under sail yet, but I'm getting CLOSE!). When I originally posted pics of the boat, someone mentioned that I had a modified "swept spreader" rig. Once the rig was stepped, the spreaders came in line and are actually straight - they just appeared to be swept because the mast was horizontal and gravity got the best of the spreaders.
Jim #183 - Team Short Bus Still floating (and dry!) after 2 weeks on the water. Electrical panel has been replaced, stereo/CD player installed. Ready to go sailing, hopefully this week! Wood still being refinished...
I have gottem some new drawings from Matt for the Capri 25. The spreaders on our boat were connected only by a cotter pin? I thought to myself why the PO would do this, but to my surprize, in the new drawing it shows a cotter pin securing the spreader to the mast? The spreaders on our boat are now attached with a bolt and a locknut, The spreaders wil move for and aft, and they will also move up and down. If you look at the spreader drawing, you can see the deg. you should have them set.
I will post new PDF's today for the group, They awnser allot of questions on rigging, sheaves, and all line sizes, stay sizes, forstay, ect.
Thanks guys, this is excellent info. Mine did not move before and it made me a bit nervous about my rig naturally. Mine were also bolted with locknuts, apparently the rigging tape was added.
Rick the rigging tape was added for chafe protection, I don't see how the tape could structurally do anything at all. Our spreaders were pointed down untill I got a pool brush and knocked them back into place. Another Capri 25 here has newer spreaders installed on the mast. They use 3 bolts at the mast/spreader conection and they are solid around the spreader, meaning that the spreader inserts into the mast bracket.
I spent a good day in a bunsons chair fixing ours, this is one part of the boat I don't want to be moving.
Just read it wrong, I can see where it could help on the inside as well. I have also read that you can PVA the spreader and fill the bracket with thickened epoxy and insert the spreader to make the joint really tight.
By the way, I don't appear to have the plate to hook the hardware to for the cunnigham and vang on the port side of the mast, does anyone else? Pictures?
I don't have the bracket installed too, But the 1983 Model of the lowes does have one installed. I also dont have the wire pennants, and my backstay is installed upside down. The running rigging is close, but could be done just like the drawings.
My wife and I raced on Monday in a Long distance race here in Tulsa. We got shafted on crew so we caught a ride on the Low's boat. We finished 2nd in Keelboats, Third overall. There was a E-Scow out there hauling @SS. We learned allot from the Lows as they have been racing their Capri 25 for 22 Years. We had great Spinnaker sets, and we peeled the forsail 3 times starting with the 105% to a 155%. Every thing went sooo smooth and I now know why they are always in the top 3.
Thanks Duane, I will send a floor sample out Monday, Back up to the boat on Saturday to do some fine tweeking, and a good cleaning of the interior. Everything is just thrown into large duffle bags, which is good when we race because we just throw them on the deck, But I have so much stuff everywhere. Anyway we have a big Thistle Race this weekend so we might go out and watch them. Have a good weekend everybody
