I use Simple Green or Soft Scrub if the're stubborn. We had a bad row with birds last season and now we hang up those flags you see on car lots to discourage them. It seems to work.
I used the CD approch, seems to work pretty good. I hang a couple off the boom when I'm away. I use a old snap on the end of the string so I can take them off easy when I get back down to the boat.
Have had luck with bird netting with ties which goes up quickly and packs in a bag for storage. This keeps the mess down and use water and brush then cleaner/wax to get the stain off. Have also used SS wire with 2 inch cut pieces of shroud cover installed on mast head and above spreaders. Also stay away from boats that attract birds. I launch tomorrow for the season and in a new slip that will test all my efforts. Good luck to us all.
We got a kite in the shape of an osprey and ran it up the flag line. We got it at a Wild Birds Unlimited store. It's one that you can just fly from a post in your yard like a wind sock I guess. It was more successful for us than the various reflective stuff we tied on. Someone else on the lake tried a Canadian goose kite, but I don't think it was quite as successful. Not a bird of prey afterall "Oscar", as we've named him, looks like an Osprey hovering over the boat.
