A funny thing happened while we were outfitting and upgrading the boat for this season. It seems that all the items we added to the starboard side (refrigerator, 2 new AGM batteries) and filling our 10 gallon water tank, have made the boat list about 5 degrees to the starboard side while docked. I am wondering if this is going to cause issues while sailing?

We don't really have choice about the placement of water and batteries...and the fridge is in an ideal spot. Can anyone make recommendatiosn about balancing the boat?

a 5 degree list is nothing to worry about unless you are racing. But you could always put an extra anchor and chain in the port locker.

Cate,

Or you can opt to carry water in jugs and empty the water tank. My '83's water tank holds 15 gallons by the way. Wouldn't use it for anything other than exterior bodily cleansing. What goes internally comes from bottled water containers. I saw some fairly scary things floating about in dockside water, and in New York at that. Oogonium I thought at the time but didn't check it out.

The advantage of bottled water is that you can shift them about to balance your boat. Just a thought.

I am thinking of removing my water tank altogether. I would not drink out of it, nor use it for cooking. So that leaves washdown and I sail the great lakes so I have enough freash water. I buy the 2.5 gal jugs of water and I can put them anywhere to balance the boat. Cheers.

Dennis...Before removing your water tank, be sure that your boat doesn't need its ballast to correct any list the boat may have. I only use my water tank for ballast and when my tank is full, the boat sits nice and level.

What side is your motor on and is it on the boat yet?
