Hi ya'll, this will be my first summer with my C250 w/b and the info in the Catalina Owners manual concerning lightning is rather vage. Any suggestions on how to protect me and my boat when I go to the Keys this summer?

Thanx,

Gary, I wrote a treatise about lightning protection and the trailer sailor a few years ago that might be of interest. Each sailor must decide for oneself about grounding.

The ion dissipating brush you refer to needs the mast grounded.

Hey guys... Arlyn's "lightning' article is one of the best I've come across and is an absolute must read.

I do not hesitate to admit that the phenomena scares me to bits but... having read and absorbed the information if feel that a sensible approach and calculated risk can be taken.

Arlyn's article, although inconclusive due to lack of available supportive research/funding, suggests some things we as trailer sailors are able to do... or not do!!

Make sure you're moored next to bigger boats with taller masts. ;)

Thanx for the info and comments. I feel better and guess I'll stay ungrounded and unplug the mast lights when threatened and anchor next to a taller mast, have some good strong drinks and hunker down.

Thanx ya'll

Actually you shouldn't have to do anything, except maybe the strong drinks and a few prayers, The foremost authority on lightning is from the University of Florida where they shoot rockets into clouds with wires attached and draw lightning down to study it. I actually used to work on the DuPont property were Lightning Rd. is. The best thing to do is hove to or drop anchor and go below if you are caught in a bad thunder storm.
