Subject: Thru - Hull

Santa bought me some toys for Christmas. I recived a Standard
Horizon Knot meter/Temp guage, And the Windspeed / Knot meter that
installs up on the mast head. Does anyone have these installed on
their boats? I was wondering about the location of the Thru-hull.
Where is the best place to install this. I really don't want to
drill a 2" hole in the hull of a perfectly water tight boat. The
tranducer is 2" dia x 4" tall. I was thinking forward of the keel in
the space where the porta-pottie goes. is there enough space here?
Or would it be better forward of that in the storage space under the
forward v-birth. Next are the location of the insterments. If I
place them on the sides of the companionway, When Im on a tack, The
trimmer will be in the way of my seeing them. I was thinking of
under the companionway hatch? Or making a fiberglass box they
install in, and installing this on top of the sliding hatch. I need
some help on this. If I make a fiberglass box it will give me some
good practice working with the epoxy and gelcoats before I have to
repair the small crack in the top of the deck.

For the new members the baot had been hit on port tack last summer
by the PO. Check the photos, HULL #17. I have removed the track on
the starboard side, and the teak trim peice on the inside of the
boat. The crack does NOT go all the way thru the deck, and the hull
has popped back out(do to the bent track holding it into place).I
have ordered all of the parts and materials needed to repair the
damage $300.00, and am waiting untill spring to start the work. FYI
The PO had the Damage estamated by the insurance company at
$6000.00+!!!! I am just fine in sailing the boat how it sits right
now. Everybody tells me the Capri 25 is a wet boat anyway because of
the low freeboard. Mine will be a little wetter down below:)

Chris,

I'm giving this a lot of thought as well because I am dealing with a
simaliar decision. Everything I read and everyone I talk to says the
transducers should be forward of the keel, yet that doesn't leave a
lot of space in a Capri as you don't want these on too much of a curve
of the hull. I'm still sorting it out.
My Standard Horizon instruments are also mounted on the bulkheads next
to the hatchway. It's generally your jib man who is supposed to watch
these things anyway, but they are hard to see up there if you are
single handing.
None of my stuff functions except the depth meter (it's all 80's
vintage), so I plan on removing it all and patching the holes
including the transducers. I've thought a lot about where I will put
the new instruments. At this point, I am thinking I will mount them on
the rails in line with the traveler, this way they will be readable
when I single hand, but won't be in the way when crew has to hike up
on the rails or the jib/genny winches. I've seen this done on another
Capri with the compass and on a Catalina 25 with the instruments. I
have not seen it done with the instruments you have. I plan on
replacing mine with a chart plotter/fish finder like the Lowrance
Color M68c <http://www.lowrance.com/Marine/Products/M68CSMap.asp> and
a multi display unit like the TackTick
<http://www.tacktick.com/products/view_product.asp?prod=4> with the
deck bracket, thus requiringing only 2 displays.

What about a fiberglass box under the traveler with a slope for the
instruments?

Let us know what you decide, I think a lot of us will be dealing with
this.
